Regarding recent drama...
submitted about 11 years ago by kirktBring on the Diacetyl, baby

A user has messaged the mods asking for some comment on what's going on, so here it is, even though we were hoping to see it played out.

I foolishly injected myself into this early on, deleting a couple reposts of jackster's recipe and making a comment regarding leaving him alone. I regret the former and stand by the latter.

Trying to delete internet content is like trying to stuff toothpaste back into the tube; it isn't going to happen, and I was foolish to try. If you post a recipe on this forum, you leave it open to all readers, including those that are selling commercially. The internet is full of niquid recipes, and some uncreative users make these and sell them to others. More creative types post their recipes for the community to tweak and comment; some of these might be sold commercially. The most creative make amazing creations and sell them themselves commercially - then this sub spends weeks trying to clone them, and then the clones might be sold commercially. If you can't deal with that, don't post your recipes and we all will suffer.

Mod position is that users won't be banned for reposting deleted recipes, and posts won't be deleted either for the same action. If you harass another user and they can prove it, a ban will be considered. Keep it cool folks.

We are a community of people united around the single goal of making great niquid at reasonable cost. Sometimes we post great originals; sometimes we post good clones and other help us refine them. Judging by the response to the recent survey, we are mostly open to ALL posts and don't even want to confine them to relevant threads. I personally really want to keep this sub operating mostly as it has been, because I've found it both a great resource and a welcoming community for DIY-ers of all levels.

On a personal level: I spend more time moderating this sub than the other 5 or 6 I mod combined. It's my favorite community. But I have a full time job, a part-time job (in a vaping related startup), and volunteer a lot of time for a local organization that involves dads spending time with their kids (Indian Princess & Guides; might be called Adventure Princess & Guides where you live, but if you are a dad of young kids please look into this in your area). I planned to spend tonight organizing new members in that last organization, but gave over an hour to put together a mod response to this, because a member thought we mods were unresponsive and I needed to show otherwise. So I hope you appreciate and agree with our reaction.

More than that, I hope we can get back to being the subreddit we were two days ago. Please be civil to each other and let's help each other make great niquid. That's what we are all about.

Final note: I've purchased Bombies 'Nana cream; it's the only commercial juice I've bought in over a year. It's damn good. jackster's recipe is very close. But I made a clone from this sub that i like even better. Sometimes the clones beat out the originals. Keep experimenting my friends.

Right on. Sorry to stir up drama. Didn't mean to attack anyone I was just getting super pissed off about the situation. Seems like everyone has calmed down for the moment though. If you were the one who deleted my original post I don't blame you there, I was pretty sure it'd be deleted. Glad you clarified your stance on all that though.

And you guys do a great job. Modding is a thankless job I'm sure but - thanks. This community has always been great, even when it was a "oh look a new post! finally! its been weeks!" type of community. I like seeing it evolve and I like the direction its going in.

How did I miss whatever it was that happened?

I personally feel that everything will eventually be cloned. Whether people are willing to share these recipes with the community is another story. I think the DIY community is going through an evolution which is very evident after the recent events . People with good pallets will be able to identify most flavors easily from popular vendors.. very few startups have invested months or years into research and development. I'm beginning to feel the industry will become like the beer industry where your average run-of-the-mill companies will begin to phase out and only the best of the craft makers will survive. If people don't want us cloning then they should stop using flavor vendors that anyone in the world can order from.

Thanks man, appreciate the support here since modding is for the most part a thankless job.

I just started coming to reddit just the last week or so just for DIY ejuice and vaping. And ill be damned if shit doesnt get started here. Us vapers are causing enough problems and issues among ourselves the FDA are the least of our worry's. We need to stop all this bullshit and become the awesome ass community we once was.

Thanks for your work and the post :) got a good banana cream recipe? :p saw you were on a banana kick! i was trying this out the other day (first mix of it): Banana (CAP) 8% Banana cream (LA) 5% Vanillin (10% conc.) 3% Coconut extra (TFA) 1%

I thought it was awesome but wish it had a more potent banana flavor to it, so i tweaked it but it wasn't as good, i feel the banana became muted.

Sounds good, I don't have CAP banana but I have an open shopping cart at the wiz and just added to my cart.

Let me guess, you volunteered? Those old sayings are passed on for a reason ;-)

It certainly isn't a paying position. I've learned the ones you volunteer for take more time and get more manure piled on than the ones that give you cash.

Nicely put! I was starting to get a little turned off in the recent days. This sub is one of my favorites because there isn't a lot of drama. I just hope it gets back on pace! Now back to mixing!!!

I have to be honest, i just pulled out the popcorn and felt bad for jacks :-( Didn't want to overstep my bounds as the new guy though or I would have gladly whipped some ass.

I think we are all hoping it just goes away. I tried to stem the flood and made it worse. Lesson in trying to stop an internet pitchforking I suppose.

Did everything get deleted or something? I'm not seeing anything at all about this anywhere but this post. This is incredibly confusing.

by Botboy141about 11 years ago

Haha, /u/kirkt started a thread earlier this week or last week (maybe the weekend) looking for a better name for our stuff instead of e-juice. I guess niquid got upvoted a bit but I dont like it seeing as http://www.nicquid.com/ is already an ejuice manufacturer...

Oh, bloody hell.

yeah, the nicquid thing is what confused me. at first i was like . . .is nicquid especially cloned or something? are people just working their asses off to clone all of nicquid's juices?

1 points

by judasblueabout 11 years ago

Yeah, thanks, that was throwing me, since I was at one point a big fan of one of niquid's discontinued juices and knew their line fairly well and was all "wait, none of these are niquid flavors."

Me too. First time I saw the term. I'm such a nicompoop.

Just want to throw my thanks out to you too, kirkt, and the rest of the mods. Appreciate all you do quietly in the background to keep this sub as great as it is.

This is a very invigorating post. People need to draw lines when they have their own recipe, but this community in general is receptive to new ideas.

It's a grey area, and what I personally believe is best, is to let recipes rock on their own, despite those who may want to stifle them.

While people are creating, they'll come across things others may have, but if multiple people come across the same conclusion - it should just be appreciated.

Isn't a B&M selling recipes from here a good thing?

I don't DIY myself, so I'd love it if a local B&M sold some of the best recipes from here.

I just don't have the proper space for DIY, so if I want to try out the recipes here I have to resort to something like VapeCrafter

The big problem was that a vendor took a clone recipe of a popular product, mixed it, and sold it as that popular product.

2 points

by kidawesomeabout 11 years ago

This is pretty much why recipes are trade secrets and not public.

1 points

by SirTimmyTimbitabout 11 years ago

That's shame on the vendor. But one shouldn't hide their recipes because of that.

You can learn to make bombs from engineering books but that doesn't mean they should stop printing them.
