Testing with a dripper vs tank
submitted about 11 years ago by Dpjelley

The other day I did my first build on my magma. It was a very simple build as I am just using it to test my DIY mixes. I have a mix that has tasted perfect in my tank for weeks. I decided to throw some on my Magma to see how it was on there, and I couldn't even vape it. It was very harsh and was heavy on my chest. It was a berry mix with 1% menthol and 2% koolada.

Should it be THAT much of a difference, or is something else going on? I only bought the Magma and supplies so that it would be easier to test juices without having to fill up my tank. I am using 28g Kanthal and sterile cotton. Maybe the coil is too high above the hole, or not high enough?

Edit: sorry if this isn't the correct place for this. I know most of you drip for testing, so I thought maybe you would have some insight!

Another thing to keep in mind is your nic levels, most people move down their nic percentage considerably when they move to a RBA

yep. 6mg in my drippers....12mg in my tanks

A good point, indeed.

Yes there's a big difference between RDAs and tanks. You're using too much koolada. That stuff gets very harsh above 1%. Even 1% is a lot. Menthol is more flexible, you can go higher without it getting nasty.

Are the coils you are using the exact same for both the magma and the tank?

Yes, 2 ohm build on both of them. Although, the Aerotank Mega was not rebuilt by me, it was the upgraded dual coil from Kanger.

There is definitely a huge difference between what is essentially a "glassomizer" and an RDA. So what tastes perfect in a tank, may need to be adjusted (usually reducing flavor percentages) for an RDA, in my opinion.

Are you using nic? Reduce it to like 3mg (or test w/ 0mg so that you know forsure it isn't the flavoring)

That's a fuckload of menthol/koolada (for me anyway). Dripping it would certainly amplify it's effect.

Yeah, when I use 2% Koolada and 1 or 2% menthol on a tank it is barely noticeable by me. That might be because I love menthol and that is what I've always smoked pre vaping days.

I started fooling around with menthol/koolada mixes recently and started with a 1.5% of each, and it was unvapeable in a Fogger v4 and any RDA. I reduced to .5% and it was still very very intense, but that may just be me.

I vaped Halo Sub Zero for a long time in a ProTank 2, but I don't think I could do it now in any kind of an RTA/RDA.

I have a couple mixes I am very happy with in my tank. I am now rethinking the process because I don't want to give my buddies this juice if it is going to suck out of an RDA. I need to figure out how to make the mixes so they will be good out of an RDA or tank...Thanks for the input.

I'm at 5% Koolada on a regular basis without issue. I'm going with your nic level as the cause of the added harshness between RBA and RDA.

Maybe dumb, but needs to be said. Did you clean out the magma?

I have the same issue juice tastes OK in kayfun but terrible in Tobh, not sure what to do. Juices I buy seem to taste good regardless of the device used.
