September "Use This Flavor" Challenge
submitted about 11 years ago by Botboy141Gunner's Gold Gourmet E-Juice

Per a suggestion kicked off by /u/over9000 here is the official, first ever, "Use This Flavor" Monthly Challenge. The purpose of this challenge is to gather the community to explore a flavor and it's many uses.

####We're not just looking for you to post recipes you have containing the flavor of the month, but looking for you to share your process as you develop a new juice using the flavor of the month.

This should help us all to better understand how certain flavors interact, and give us all a launching point to perhaps discovering new wonderful recipes.

This thread has been linked in the sidebar for easy access throughout the month. All previous months threads will be linked in the current month thread as well. Additionally, I'm picking a flavor for this first month that hopefully, most folks have.

#####Please post suggestions for next month's flavor under my post below requesting it.

For now, I am going to ask for a TFA flavor and preferably a common one. The following month (November) we'll move beyond TFA to either INW, CAP or FA. The most upvoted flavor in that section will be the flavor for next month (I'll freeze that on the 21st, allowing those that don't have it time to purchase and have it arrive).

###Please post new recipes created using this flavor as well as any and all tasting notes as main posts. Thought process is encouraged also.

This thread will NOT be in contest mode so the best flavors and reviews of those should move their way towards the top.

While I definitely encourage you to branch out with this flavor and use some more rare flavors, I would encourage everyone to keep it in mind that others will not be able to try your recipe and comment or offer assistance if they do not have the flavors you are using. I would also encourage you to use this month's flavor as the "main" flavor in your recipe although this is not required.

You BETTER sample and offer tasting notes on your recipe.

Good luck to everyone!

##September's Flavor is:

I'm going to start a juice build from scratch here to try to give some of you newer folks a process to follow if so far, you've only been working off other people's recipes or keeping it simple.

My first step is to decide what I want my juice to taste like. Well, we know peach, and I'd like to keep that as the main flavor. I'm going to attempt a peach citrus drink blend, think of a Peach Fresca if there is one. I'm not looking to overly carbonate though (I can't stand champagne) so just a good juicy peach and strong citrus undertones, maybe a little bubbly.

Given that my main flavor is going to be peach, I need to figure out what percentage to start off at.

I chose 8% simply because that's what the flavor review thread recommends. Might be right for this, might not, only time will tell.

Now I need to pick the complementary flavors and the citrus. For the citrus taste, I'm going to keep it simple once again and use Citrus Punch (TFA). Now picking a %% for this one is a bit more difficult for me as I've never used it. Flavor reviews don't appear to be great for it, but since I'm out of lime right now, I'm going to go with it and see what happens. Should also help to add a smidge of carbonation (I hope).

We'll start with 5%. Now I just need some additives to give the flavor a little depth. I'm a big fan of Nectarine so going to throw that in @ 3% to add another layer to the peach flavor. 1% Pear should help to add a bit more complexity over time with fruits like these, maybe less but we'll start there. Adding 1% Lemon (TFA) as well for just a little more lemon kick and to help the other fruits to pop.

So, we have September Challenge V0.1:

  • 8% Juicy Peach (TFA)
  • 5% Citrus Punch (TFA)
  • 3% Nectarine (TFA)
  • 1% Pear (TFA)
  • 1% Lemon (TFA)

Mix these up real quick @ 3mg/ml 30PG/70VG (my preferred mix for my drip). Give it a quick shake and vape on my .25ohm parallel 28ga dual coil in my oversized TOBH on my Big Nasty by Tatroe.

Note: I'll add here that my flavor palette is not nearly as refined as many of the individuals in this sub nor am I nearly as articulate when it comes to flavors.

I'm tasting a rather bland inhale, no real flavor is standing out right now. The exhale begins with citrus, but turns to a strong savory note of nectarine and then a nice peach finish. Not bad. Need some time to gauge the inhale, have a bit of vapers tongue at the moment.

Quite decent for a first attempt to be perfectly honest.

If it wasn't reasonable at all first attempt, I'd likely make some immediate adjustments in another 5ml batch size. For now, I'm going to just throw this in a hot water bath (candle warmer ~130F) overnight with the top off and try it again and record tasting notes tomorrow. If the flavor doesn't adjust much, I may or may not make adjustments already.

Tune in tomorrow for more info!

Thanks for doing this. It really helps to get the mindset on how to make a mix.

I opened up V0.1 a few minutes ago and gave it a drip. It's got the right texture and mouth feel that I was going for, unfortunately the citrus is a little too strong.

The large amount of citrus makes it a little bit harsh, not bad, just a little more throat hit due to flavor than I like. In my experience that IS likely to calm down with more time however, in case it doesn't, I'm going to try a second iteration of this now. I've decided to eliminate the Lemon and drop the Citrus Punch by a little bit.

September Challenge V0.2

  • 8% Juicy Peach (TFA)
  • 3% Citrus Punch (TFA)
  • 3% Nectarine (TFA)
  • 1% Pear (TFA)

Just threw it in a hot water bath. We'll see how it tastes in 24 hours.

So went ahead and tried V0.2 a minute ago. The citrus/lemon has definitely been toned down, but still a smidge too high for my taste. Rather than reducing it more though, I'm going to add a little bit of TFA Marshmallow.

The marshmallow should help to add sweetness which should lighten the throat hit from the Citrus. It should also add some body.

I won't try V0.1 again for another 5 days or so. Will give it a full week to cure and see what it does. I'll come back to V0.2 at the same time.

Putting together V0.3 now which will look like this:

September Challenge V0.3

  • 8% Juicy Peach (TFA)
  • 3% Citrus Punch (TFA)
  • 3% Nectarine (TFA)
  • 1% Pear (TFA)
  • 2% Marshmallow (TFA)

Reporting back in roughly 24 hours with my reviews of V0.3 once it has had an overnight in a warm water bath with the top off.

Alright, updating again. V0.1, .2 and .3 are all OK but I like V0.4 the most. It's been steeping a few days now and have to say I like where it's at. Strong notes of citrus with an excellent Peach to it, not harsh (like i get with a lot of citrus blends). Excited to share it. Vape at will.

September Challenge V0.4

  • 8% Juicy Peach (TFA)
  • 1.5% Citrus Mix (FA)
  • 3% Nectarine (TFA)
  • 1% Pear (TFA)
  • 2% Marshmallow (TFA)

Content with this. The Citrus Mix works better than Citrus Punch for this recipe IMHO. If you want to add some carbonation, throw in a couple percent of TFA Champagne but like I said previously, I'm not big on the carbonation feel.

One of the recipes on my list to work on is a cantaloupe/peach recipe. I feel those two flavors go pretty good together. That is if you like the taste of cantaloupe. For this recipe I stuck with flavors that most people would have on hand rather than mixing different flavors from different brands.

This recipe is just off the top of my head obviously with TFA Canataloupe and Juice Peach being in the mix. I also chose honeydew because it seems to round out the melon thing and at a low enough percent it doesn't take over. For a complimentary flavor I chose CAP sweet strawberry. I like it the most of the strawberries and it can sometimes sweeten up a fruity mix. I left it at a low percentage because I didn't want to necessarily taste the strawberry.

The recipe (70VG/30PG at 4mg)

  • 8% TFA Cantaloupe
  • 5% TFA Juicy Peach
  • 2% TFA HoneyDew
  • 1.5% CAP Sweet Strawberry

I just mixed this and tasted it after a quick hot water bath in a RDA at ~45 watts.

The cantaloupe obviously is there. I detect the peach in there but it's doesn't come through as it's own flavor. I may increase this .5-1% to see how it changes the mix. Occasionally I get a taste of the honeydew but I didn't want it to be up front so that's perfectly fine with me. I don't taste the strawberry at all which is what I was going for. It's not a very complex juice but it's enjoyable to me. Of course you may get something else entirely out of this.

Honestly it's not bad for a first mix if those flavors are your thing. It could use some tweaking and I'd probably experiment with some different melons and even some different peaches.

Yeah TFA Cantaloupe is tough to work with, especially without a few days of steep first. Keep em coming though! Would love to see people refine a few peach recipes by the end of the month.

Great Idea! I'll give it a go. I'll even narrate my thought process for everybody, so as to give you all a glimpse into my madness.

Lately, I have been on a dessert kick, so when I saw that the flavor of the month was Juicy Peach from TFA (a great flavor, btw) my immediate thought was a delicious peach cobbler with ice cream. I immediately reached for my Capella's Vanilla Custard.

"Wait. I only ordered one bottle of Vanilla Custard last order? Well...that was stupid."

No matter, let's do this with TFA Vanilla Cupcake. It is a good vanilla flavor, and not far off of Capella's Vanilla Custard. Now, what else is needed for cobbler? Cinnamon, in the way of TFA Cinnamon Danish, and brown sugar. Let's go with Cheesecake Graham from TFA. Never could taste anything but graham in it anyway.

"You just got that new Capella Juicy Peach, too. Let's throw that in at a low percent to get some variation on your peachiness."

Wonderful idea, crazy voice inside of me. Let's do it. And last but not least, let's give our peach a little kick of citrus with some Golden Pineapple.

Alright, so....

  • 6% TFA Juicy Peach
  • 3% CAP Juicy Peach
  • 4% TFA Vanilla Cupcake
  • 2% TFA Cinnamon Danish
  • 3% TFA Cheesecake (Graham Crust)
  • 1% CAP Golden Pineapple

A Note, before I taste: I tend to mix at max VG, so if you are planning on following the recipe and use a bit more PG, you may want to drop a percentage off of the cheesecake, and another off of one of the pineapple.

Thoughts: Man am I kicking myself for only ordering one bottle of Capella Vanilla Custard, I really wish this had Capella Vanilla Custard in it. That being said, the inhale is very peachy with the Cinnamon and graham notes being more noticeable on the exhale. It's a very tame flavor, and I could definitely vape this as an ADV, but I don't think it is really the peach cobbler I was looking for. I'll let it breathe over night and report back in.

> Juicy Peach from TFA (a great flavor, btw)

Picked for 2 reasons. 1) Because it's an excellent flavor and 2) Because I haven't played with it nearly enough.

Excellent post. Have a feeling I'm going to enjoy seeing into the mindset of others with this thread!

Pretty sure we have more high quality content in this thread in the last 3 hours than we've had on this sub in the last few weeks. LOL...

Keep em coming.

Please post your suggestions for next months flavor under this comment. Please remember, the most up-voted flavor will be our choice. For October, let's keep it to a TFA flavor, preferably a commonly used one.

Do me a favor, don't downvote these, upvotes only please.

I haven't had any luck with it yet. I've been trying to make a taro bubble tea and it just tastes like yams. Really string yams.... I'm just curious if anyone has made anything good with it. So far I find it terrible.

TFA Bourbon. I think this is a great flavor that has tons of potential that needs to be exposed. I made a chocolate bourbon that is divine. Needs a bit of tweaking and another complementary flavor, but I think TFA bourbon is where it's at.

I did some more tweaking last night and I am very happy with it. Recipe follows:

Borvan

  • 1% TFA Kentucky Bourbon
  • 0.5% TFA Bavarian Cream (LA works too)
  • 2% LA Marshmallow
  • 0.7% CAP Double Chocolate
  • 0.5% TFA French Vanilla
  • 2% TFA Peanut Butter
  • 0.5% TFA Sweet Cream

It has a great flavor profile in my opinion, but still needs some tweaking. That's only the third time I've tweaked it yet.

For ease of reference, I have included the comments on Juicy Peach / Peach (Juicy) (TFA) from the Flavor Review thread. They are lacking. Hopefully by the end of the month we'll have a comprehensive compilation of tasting notes and reviews for Juicy Peach (TFA).

  • Peach Juicy 9/10 8% and up. A nice peach flavor that reminds of of the little peach gummy rings. This peach mixes well, and at 10% is a solid stand-alone flavor.

Currently my favorite peach flavor which can be used in a lot of juices. Here's my main one, I call it "Spongebob" basically just pineapple + peach.

30/70 PG/VG

  • TFA Peach (Juicy): 8%
  • TFA Pineapple: 8%
  • Ethyl Maltol: 2%

Simple & Delicious.

A bit late to the game but here's my attempt from a newbie's perspective. I'd love to hear some feedback on my "process" and any recommendations on how I could take the recipe further.

Me: Hmmm so what goes well with peach...

10 minutes later with no ideas whatsoever

Me: I know, I'll consult my good friend Google!

Google: Peaches go well with: allspice, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, berries, apricots, cherries, lemon, arugula, mint etc etc etc

Me: Hmmm, I have cinnamon, vanilla, apricots, mint and a few different citrus flavours. Let's go with peach as the main flavour with a touch of vanilla to add to the body and mint for some sweetness. I'll throw in some citrus as well to bring out the peach.

Grabs following flavours: Juicy Peach (TFA), Vanilla (Inawera), Mint (Inawera), Lemon Lime (TFA)

Me: Hmmm, so what percentages should I use? Matt's thread suggested that Juicy Peach is a good standalone at 10% so I'll go with that.

Me: Vanilla next! /u/Botboy141's mega thread says 5 + 3 + 5 drops on 5ml. Dafuq??!?!?! Ok ok, let's Math this shit. I read every where that there's around 20 drops in a ml so 13 drops should be around 0.65ml. 0.65 divide by 5 is 13%. Wait, that seems a bit excessive! It can't be right!

Spends next half an hour googling and finds this link which suggests 3%

Me: Hmmm, that's a bit low! Sod it, I'll just try the Vanilla at 5%!

Me: Mint. I remember using this in a few chocolate mixes and it was quite strong so maybe 0.5%?

Me: Lemon Lime. I should really have thrown this one out a long time ago as it's quite strong/harsh and has ruin almost every single mix I've used it in. Maybe FA Citrus Mix would be a better choice but I need it for another recipe I'm working on. Ah well, let's try this at 0.5% and thrown some TFA Orange Cream in there at 1% to try and smooth it out a little

Grabs Orange Cream from the stash and sees a bottle of Cinnamon Red Hot

Voice inside my head: Throw some cinnamon in there. It goes well with peach. Google said so!

Me: Cinnamon with vanilla? That sounds weird!

Voice inside my head: Go on, it'll be like a spiced peach

Me: NO, it'll have too much throat hit! I want a smooth peachy vape.

Voice inside my head: Add some Horchata then

Me: NO!

Ignoring the my inner demons I entered the following recipe into JuiceCalculator, whipped my scales out and mixed 15ml at 3mg 50PG/50VG (adding nicotine first then the flavours then shake the hell out of it, then the VG and more shaking and finally the PG and even more shaking)

  • Juicy Peach (TFA) - 10%
  • Vanilla (Inawera) - 5%
  • Orange Cream (TFA) - 1%
  • Mint (Inawera) - 0.5%
  • Lemon Lime (TFA) - 0.5%

Tasting notes (Freshly Mixed)

The mint smelt strong! Loaded it up into a freshly coiled Fogger v4, I'm not getting much vanilla. There's a little bit of peach on the inhale but not as much as I'd like. All I get on the exhale is mint and I couldn't taste any vanilla whatsoever. Not great but not too bad. Hopefully a few days of curing will bring the vanilla out and tone the mint down.

Tasting notes (After 1 week)

Still smells very minty but not as bad as before. The vanilla has come out and the mint has been tamed. It almost taste a bit like those hard boiled mint candy. Very pleasant and I'm quite happy with it but whilst it's there, the peach isn't that noticeable.

Still considering what to do for v2. I don't really want to up the percentages for the peach so maybe I'll lower the vanilla and mint. Or add a drop or 2 of sour to make the peach pop more. Decisions decisions decisions

To be continued

Thanks! I think I know why the percentages seemed way out. Those Inawera bottles have tiny nozzles so it's more like 40 drops per ml.

So, 2 ideas came out from the tasting notes of v1:

  • Reduce the amount of mint that is masking the peach
  • Add more complimentary flavours to bring out the peach.

13 years as a software engineer has taught me that I should take a more methodical approach and make one set of changes at a time so I can identify what works and what doesn't. As such, I've came up with 3 new iterations:

/u/overachiever's peachy concoction v2

Reduced the amount of mint for this one as I think that's what overpowering the peach.

  • Juicy Peach (TFA) - 10%
  • Vanilla (Inawera) - 5%
  • Orange Cream (TFA) - 1%
  • Mint (Inawera) - 0.25%
  • Lemon Lime (TFA) - 0.5%

/u/overachiever's peachy concoction v3

Replaced Lemon Lime (TFA) with Citrus Mix (FA) and bumped it up to 1%; Added 1% of Apricot (TFA) to compliment the peach

  • Juicy Peach (TFA) - 10%
  • Vanilla (Inawera) - 5%
  • Orange Cream (TFA) - 1%
  • Mint (Inawera) - 0.5%
  • Citrus Mix (FA) - 1.0%
  • Apricot(TFA) - 1%

/u/overachiever's peachy concoction v4

I succumbed to my inner demon and decided to add a touch of Horchata to see if I can get a bit of fire and ice action.

Voice inside my head: Muwahahahahahahhaah

  • Juicy Peach (TFA) - 10%
  • Vanilla (Inawera) - 5%
  • Orange Cream (TFA) - 1%
  • Mint (Inawera) - 0.5%
  • Lemon Lime (TFA) - 0.5%
  • Horchata (TFA) - 0.5%

I've mixed 5ml of each version this time since v1 suggests that these will need a week of steep time for the vanilla to come out so I'm not going to bother with tasting the fresh mixes.

Tune in next week for some tasting notes

1 points

by overachieverabout 11 years ago

Tasting notes for v2 after 1 week

Smells a lot less minty than the v1 and the reduction of the mint has helped to bring the peach out a bit. The peach is still not very pronounced though and it's missing the minty candy exhale I enjoyed from v1. Overall, I prefer v1 to v2.

Tasting notes for v3 after 1 week

Very strong notes of citrus which has bring out the peach a lot more. There is however a weird bitter after taste which I can't explain. Worst one out of the lot.

Tasting notes for v4 after 1 week

There is a very faint hint of cinnamon but it doesn't really compliment this mix. It might be worth upping the horchata or swapping it out for some red hots to get a completely different flavour profile but that's an experiment for another time.

Next steps

So after 3 iterations, I'm back to square one. I am content with v1 but I'll go for one more iteration to try and bump the peach up:

/u/overachiever[1] 's peachy concoction v5

  • Juicy Peach (TFA) - 12%
  • Vanilla (Inawera) - 5%
  • Orange Cream (TFA) - 1%
  • Mint (Inawera) - 0.5%
  • Lemon Lime (TFA) - 0.5%
