Hey all,
I've been lacking inspiration lately, and haven't made a whole lot of DIY. I made a few new recipes earlier in the week, but honestly, I'm disappointed in all of them. I made a peach-lychee flavor, a blueberry/pomegranate/raspberry sour recipe, a honeydew cream, and a sour guava.
The sour blueberry actually turned out pretty good. It needs a little bit of a sweeter exhale, but I got the combination of fruits and sour inhale pretty well. The honeydew cream, I wayyyyy overshot the cream. My first version of the mix didn't have enough cream, so I raised the cream and lowered the fruits, but I overdid both. I think I just need to go back to the drawing board on this.
The peach lychee and sour guava... were just bad. Here's the recipes I used for both:
-
8% TFA Guava
-
3% TFA Strawberry
-
2% TFA Pear
-
1% TFA Raspberry
-
1% TFA Sour
My intention was to have a predominantly guava juice, with pear and strawberry to round out the sweetness and raspberry + sour to make it... well, sour. Unfortunately, it just tastes bad. The previous recipe (different flavors) I used TFA Guava at 8% and couldn't taste it at all, it was overpowered by grapefruit and pineapple. However here, this mix just tastes nasty. Maybe it's too much guava, maybe it's just other fruits mixing in unpleasant ways, but I don't even think this is worth continuing. Unfortunately, I used the last of my TFA guava mixing it :/
Any ideas for where I should start on a sour guava type mix? I'm probably gonna get some more TFA in my next order, maybe another vendor's guava too.
And the peach lychee flavor:
-
5% TFA Lychee
-
~3% TFA Strawberry (added later, not sure exact %)
-
3% TFA Juicy Peach
-
2% CAP Juicy Peach
-
1% TFA Koolada
-
1% TFA Sour
I added the strawberry in after vaping a bit of it... I can't tell whether this is an issue with Lychee or Peach. The exhale tastes almost right - it's kind of a combination of Lychee and Peach gummy rings. However, sometimes the exhale is just downright nasty, and the inhale is generally pretty bad too. I might start this one over with just one flavor of Peach, but I don't really know which one to use. Any suggestions? Also planning to pick up another vendor's Lychee on my next order.
Lychee can be a weird flavor sometimes, I would try lowering the lychee to 2-3% and see if that helps. I use it alot in fruity flavors at low percents to give a tropical taste, Ive never tried it a higher percentage. Have you ever tried apricot instead of peach, or combine them? The apricot to me is a more convincing peach flavor, especially when you mix them. I also love Capella's sweet guava, I havent tried the TFA guava so I cant compare, but I'm willing to bet that if you combine them you'd have a good outcome.
If sweet guava is anything like cap sweet mango it tastes more like the nectar than the actual fruit.

How long are you letting these blends cure? They'll probably taste like shit for the first two weeks. Optimally I'd wait three and then try to discern the different flavor notes. Waiting for juice to cure is the hardest part of DIY. What it tastes like right after you mix it and what it will taste like in three weeks is usually drastically different.
One thing I've learned... Take your expectations and throw them out the window. Unless you fully understand how a flavor works, (comes with experience) any flavor you build in your head won't end up the way you imagined it would.
Honestly, I would suggest moving away from TFA as a whole. I've worked through several TFA flavorings and recently moved to IW and FA. Accents like the Sour and such are ok to keep, but the other brands allow for a fuller, more complex flavoring.
Eh. I have a bunch of IW flavors I want, but I have this whole drawer of flavors I like and want to use up first.
I agree with this to an extent. I'm now moving on to FA, CAP and INW myself although TFA still has A LOT to offer. Vanilla Swirl is just amazing, their bavarian cream is excellent, love their Honey Dew and Coconut. Looking elsewhere for a lot of fruit flavors now though as I've just been a bit let down and feel like there's better out there.
