I'm at the edge with this damn stubborn flavor
submitted about 11 years ago by [deleted]

I've been working on this one juice for well over a month now. It just won't work, and good god it gets better every time I revise it yet I keep getting problems. As in my kayfun coil keeps clogging up(or the wick burns and sometimes both), the flavors are a little off, and my most recent revision now makes my throat swell.

Here it is, almost two months of progress (All flavors TFA, gonna expand into new territory pretty soon though).

V1- Kentucky bourbon 5% Kalua and cream 5% Tauro 1%. Horrible, threw the bottle away after two drags. Tauro is STRONG 2 drops in a 10ml can make a huge difference, 1% was unvapable.

V2- Kentucky bourbon 5% Kalua and cream 5%. A shadow of what could be awesome.

V3- Kentucky bourbon-5% Kalua and cream 4% Caramel 4% Vanilla bourbon 2%. I'll be honest, I don't think this was the original percentage, I just remember Caramel and vanilla bourbon being added and concluding that there was too much caramel.

V4- Kentucky bourbon 5% Kalua and cream 5% Caramel 2% Vanilla bourbon 3%. AND THERE IT IS THE START OF WAY TOO MANY HEADACHES. I thought it was practically done, the inhale is rough with a smooth exhale. The blend mainly consisted of kalua and cream with a mix of vanilla caramel. This is where I'm changing the coil almost every night and wicking it 2-3 times a day.

V5- Same as V4 just with vanilla bourbon swapped out with vanilla swirl. This was a huge improvement for the flavor and made the final liquid less dark, so I figured I was done and finished. Nope, instead I made the awful mistake of bringing it to work with me. I got about five hours into work when I realized the flavor was completely off, throat hurts like hell and I'm having trouble breathing. I say enough take apart the kayfun and notice my coil is black and my wick was burned. Like the entire coil area was stained black. Well shit.

I practically gave up on the flavor for about 3 weeks while I learned how to properly build a coil and wick it. Honestly the black coil and possible throat cancer experienced that fateful day could easily be attributed to thick wick and constant use at high wattage.

V6- Kentucky bourbon 5% Vanilla bourbon 5% Vanilla swirl 3% Caramel 2%. Did some research on Kalua and cream and Vanilla bourbon, and found a case of kalua and cream messing up coils but none with vanilla bourbon. Flavor is close enough to V5 for me to still love, but the throat is too killer. It got uncomfortable after about three hours of use. Dismantled the kayfun and the wick and coil were darker than I was hoping for, but at least the flavor didn't taste burnt.

NOW WHAT IS IT THAT I EVEN WANT?! I'd just like a V5 without the throat cancer and coil gunk. I mean if you LOVE throat hit V6 may be for you, but I'm about the vanilla caramel bourbon mix more then anything. It disappoints me that I can't use kalua and cream, and I may even have to throw out vanilla bourbon and kentucky bourbon as well. Surely there must be some way to salvage this idea, but I'm up to here with this shit. If V6 didn't have crazy insane throat hit I'd call that good, but it's too much for me.

BTW this mix will scorch your dripper coil within 10 drags(I was doing 30 watts though). It will also destroy your clearomizer/cartomizer coils almost instantly. I wouldn't recommend trying this with anything other than an RTA.

Ok some questions... what VG/PG and what nicotine strength are you at? Also, did you try it in anything other than a kayfun? I find juices have different flavor profiles at different temperatues and coil builds. Lastly how long did each "Version" steep or age before you decide to do the taste testing.

My own recommendations: What I try to do is make 2 separate 5ml batches of every juice I want to try... sometimes 2 - 3ml batches or whatever size you want for testing. I will dtip 1 of the bottles on 3 different setups. 0.18 triple twisted 28g macro, 0.32 micro 24g, and 0.8 single 28g coil. This way I get various temperatures. Lastly I will let the second batch sit for one week, sometimes 4-5 days if I loved it fresh. But this will allow you to see how your juice will taste once is is able to blend together properly.

i'd reduce the kentucky bourbon and try adding a small amount of cap coconut. i find that cap coconut really smooths out my flavor profiles. you also might want to try mixing at a higher vg percentage

maybe something like this:

  • Kentucky bourbon 4%
  • Vanilla bourbon 3%
  • Vanilla swirl 2.5%
  • Caramel 2%
  • CAP Coconut 1.5%

I dunno anything about the KB but from the looks of your percentages...the cream is too high, cut this to 1% ( you don't say what type cream ) ...some vanillas are coil gunkers. FA Vanilla classic is good, so is Inawera Wanilla and Shisha Vanilla...I'm thinking the 5% cream is muting your flavors. Not familiar with the other flavors you're using. FA Cream Fresh is good but you have to go very light for it to shine.
