Matt's TFA recommendations
submitted almost 11 years ago by vapor_trails_nw

Hello, /r/DIY_eJuice!

My name is Matt, and I own and operate VaporTrailsNW.com

I have wanted to share my experience with TFA flavors for a while now, and I think that a list with my rating/percentages could be of use to my fellow DIYers out there.

The percentages are based on using the flavor solo, or as a base for a recipe.

I tried to add only the flavors that I enjoy/work well in a DIY situation. I could make an equally long post about what flavors NOT to buy, but instead, I just left 'em out.

I plan on updating this over time. Mods- if this is not appropriate, feel free to move/delete. With all that said- Let's get started!

  • Apple 8/10 - 6% and up. A very cider-like apple. Extremely blend-able, but I found out the hard way that Apple Root Beer doesn't work all too well.

  • Banana (ripe) 10/10 1 drop per 10 ml and up! This flavor will give you the banana runt vibe- but it is hard on plastics! We use around 5 drops per 10 ml on blends that we think need a banana blast.

  • Banana Cream 10/10 8% and up! If you like creamy banana flavors, get a huge bottle of this stuff- trust me!

  • Banana Nut Bread 7/10 - 6% and up. As a stand-alone, not my favorite, but damnit, it mixes like a dream with other savory/nutty flavors!

  • Berry Crunch- 8/10 - 7% and up. This flavor is pretty damn good, but we prefer to mix it with berries and milk, because the flavor is a little corn/chip heavy by itself. People love this flavor- check it out!

  • Blueberry (wild) 10/10 - 8% and up. This flavor is awesomely sweet, without being offensive in any way.

  • Blackberry 6.5/10 3% and up. I debated wether I should add this flavor or not, but I decided to go for it. Many people like this flavor- some people don't! The flavor of Blackberry is strong and distinct- try a small bottle. I have not successfully mixed this flavor with others, as it is so damn strong. Give it a shot- I feel like I just haven't unlocked the potential. I have noticed a couple of name-brand e liquids that use this flavor.

  • Caramel Cappucino 8/10 1 drop per 10 ml and up! So, this flavor is VERY potent. Get a small bottle- it is likely all you will ever need. A drop or two of this flavoring adds a great coffe punch. If you get the bottle, and it is too strong for you, leave the cap off for a week or so to let it mellow out.

  • Chai Tea- 6.5/10 2% and up! I wanted to include this flavor not because I enjoy it, but because it adds a nice spice to your blends. Think of a clove-like taste, and you have TFA's chai tea. Only drawback is that I have found it gets kind of rowdy at higher temperatures, so it loses a point.

  • Citrus Punch 8/10 - 8% and up. Tastes and smells like a knock-off Mt. Dew. For my money, it isn't dead on to the original Dew, but it comes damn close. Very hard to mix with this flavor (my .02)- best used alone!

  • Cola Cherry 7.5/10 10% and up! This flavor is reminiscent of a cherry coke- but it is more of a knock-off flavor than the real deal. Still, this makes a nice and sweet cherry vape. The taste on this is distinctive, and I do not think it would mix well with other flavors. By itself- not bad!

  • Cranberry 7.5/10 1% and up. This flavor is VERY strong. We use(d) this in Phoenix Down, and people often mistook the flavor for apple when we added the other ingredients to the blend. If you are intrigued, try a small bottle. On a side note, someone told me once that Phoenix Down cracked their Kayfun. I can't confirm this since they didn't contact me when I messaged them back, but be aware that this MAY be hard on/crack plastics.

  • Double Chocolate (clear) 8/10 10% and up. While not exactly clear, this is the clearest chocolate I have found- and it tastes pretty good to boot! The flavor reminds me of tootsie rolls. I have blended this with tangerine and mandarin orange to make a nice chocolate covered orange. If you are looking for a good chocolate flavor, just grab this one.

  • Energy Drink 6.5/10 10% and up! This flavor reminds us of a generic store-bought energy drink. It isn't bad (especially with menthol), but I have found that the flavor decays as you vape it, so it loses a point. This flavor is blendable, so mess around with it, and I think you might find some use for it's flavor profile!

  • Grape Candy 7.5/10 8% and up. Tastes a little bit like a candy-grape flavor, like jolly ranchers. Good to mix with, and a good alternative to Grape Juice (which is also good, but more of a welch's flavor).

  • Gummy 7.5/10 1% and up. Start at a low % with this flavor. Adds a nice gummy profile to your blends- try it with fruit flavors!

  • Hazelnut 10/10 3 drops per 10 ml, up to 1.5%. A GREAT flavoring that everyone who enjoys a nutty profile will enjoy. Does not necessarily taste like actual filberts- but it is creamy and awesome. Contains acetoin.

  • Jamaican Rum 8/10 6% and up (if I remember correctly). I haven't used this in a while, but rest assured- this is a SUPERB booze flavoring. As a warning, this probably shouldn't be vaped while driving- I could see a traffic officer being VERY suspicious of that rum smell that you are drenched in :)

  • Peach (juicy) 9/10 8% and up. A nice peach flavor that reminds of of the little peach gummy rings. This peach mixes well, and at 10% is a solid stand-alone flavor.

  • Pear 7.5/10 6% and up. Not sure how to describe this pear flavor other than "savory". Not quite as bright and fruity as one might expect, and lends itself well to savory blends. We use this in Teddy Pear (mixed with Apple)!

  • Peanut Butter 9/10 5 drops per 10 ml and up. A dead-on peanut flavor that has nice and creamy notes. Not quite as creamy as a true peanut butter, but damn close. Contains acetoin.

  • Pistachio 10/10 8% and up. So, this was a pleasant surprise. I expected something nutty, but it really tastes like that glorius green pistachio pudding. I personally love it, and I have a feeling you will, too.

  • Plum 7/10 10% and up. I haven't used plum in a LONG time, so I could be off with the %s, but that is what I remember using it at. It may have been up to 15%. Anyhow, this flavor tastes dead-on like Dr. Pepper. There is a slight aftertaste present, so we quit using it- but I could see people getting into it.Try blending it with other flavors to help with the after-taste

  • Pomegranate 8.5/10 6% and up. This flavor is distinct, and pretty tasty. I might bust this one back out and create a blend with it- we had some success mixing this flavor with Whipped Cream flavoring. On a side note, I have never dripped this flavor, so I have no idea how it performs under high heat conditions.

  • Raisin- ??/10 4% and up? This one is new to me, but it has a lot of potential. There is a rubber-like note that is present in higher levels (same with gummy flavoring), but at lower percentages, it was pretty awesome. Not a bad flavor for the curious DIYer- but very hard to describe the flavor. Check out a small bottle of it.

  • RY4 Asian 10/10 8% and up. A wonderful Tobacco vape. This is a honey tobacco flavor that is just pure awesome. If you are looking for a honey tobacco base, use this instead of Black Honey.

  • Strawberry 8/10 5% and up. This is a distinctive, candy-like strawberry. This does NOT mix well with savory items, such as cheesecake, waffles, cream, etc. Use this with Watermelon, or other sweet fruits to make a nice candy vape.

  • Strawberry (ripe) 11/10 8% and up. The godfather of them all! This is the strawberry to use when DIYing. Expect a fresh and savory strawberry- very true to the real deal. Buy a bottle and thank me later.

  • Sweet & Tart 8/10 6% and up. This flavor is pretty spot-on to the candies the blend is named after. Expect a sweet and tangy candy flavor. Vapes well, and mixes well.

  • Sweet Cream 10/10 no more than 3%! So, this flavor is awesome. It is easy to take a whiff of it and give it a big 'ol NOPE, but it is very effective at adding a cream flavor to your blends. Try it out. Contains acetoin.

  • Vanilla Swirl 8/10 3% and up for mixing. We use this flavor a lot, since it is the only vanilla we have found that does not contain acetoin. While on it's own, it may lack a distinct profile, this is a great flavor to blend with pretty much anything. If you are looking for a light and fluffy "lift", try adding a little Vanilla Swirl.

  • Waffle 9/10 7% and up. Very buttery and savory. This flavor is awesome, and everyone likes it. Downside- it contains trace amounts of acetoin (just found that out this morning). Can't seem to stop vaping waffles! Try mixing it with cinnamon blends (danish, horchata, etc), vanilla, and Bavarian cream- instant awesome. Also works well with fruit ('Nana, Strawberry, Blueberry, etc).

  • Watermelon 10/10 8% and up. I am sure this is a familiar flavor to most of you. To everyone else- just get it! This is a sweet and juicy watermelon, and it mixes well.

Again, I hope to add more flavors in the coming days. Enjoy!

-Matt

edit: custard notes changed to acetoin.

edit 2: added Pear, Waffle, Cranberry, and Sweet & Tart

edit 3: Changed percentage for peanut butter. Also, whoever came in and down-voted all of the comments really sucks.

Thx for this. So strawberry is for fruity mixes and strawberry ripe is for the custard mixes?

5 points

by vapor_trails_nwalmost 11 years ago

You got it! You can use strawberry ripe in the fruity mixes as well. Just avoid pairing the regular strawberry with creamy/savory flavors for the best results.

Just mixed a 10ml bottle of some strawberry, vanilla custard, cheesecake graham cracker crust, and a couple drops of dulce. It's good but the candy flavor really takes away from it. I'll be buying some ripe strawberry next order!

Thanks a lot for this post. I wish more posts were as informative as this one.

Honestly, I'd love to see a post on what flavors you didn't like, and why - or what you used instead.

Well, how about a comment post!

  • Fruit Circles - Does not taste good to me. At all.
  • White Chocolate - Unique, but peppery. Can't be peppery in a sweet choco blend and still be vapable in my book.
  • Horehound - Too much like a licorice. Just not my thing. You may dig it.
  • Honeysuckle - Has a bad aftertaste (but smells like awesome).
  • Cantaloupe - Tasted off to me, tried it once and never again.
  • Mary Jane - I know, I wanted it to be awesome too. Juniper taste and smell. Might be good to make a gin & juice blend?
  • Cubano - Never worked up the courage to try it. Smells like jalapenos. I like spicy food, but I don't want a spicy vape.
  • Mango - Tasted funky to me. I like capella's mango, though.
  • HPNO - Too much throat hit. People use this a lot. Formerly Hypno :)
  • Tiramisu - tastes great, smells like an outhouse exploded.
  • Honey - Doesn't taste like honey (use ry4 asian)
  • Green Tea - tastes like the honey flavor. Not my thing.
  • Passion Fruit - smells like a mix of mild black and green tea. Nope.
  • Mild Black - Might have some use, but the taste hits you in an unusual way. Not sure how to feel about this one.
  • Green Apple (candy) - Nope.
  • Red Velvet - tastes like graham (clear), which isn't bad, but isn't Red Velvet, either. Also, not my cup of tea.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. It's not that these are bad flavors, but I can't get into them, or just haven't unlocked their potential yet. Do not let this list dissuade you from trying a bottle of something-but try a small bottle :)

Agreed on the Green Apple candy flavor. It was just awful. Does TFA have a decent apple flavor besides the one you indicated tasted pretty cider-y? I'd gotten addicted to Sour Apples as my ADV and can't find something to replicate it.

1 points

by vapor_trails_nwalmost 11 years ago

All I have tried (all they have?) are apple candy, and apple. The apple flavor is awesome, but it is not a candy apple :( I wish I had a good direction to send you in.

If you find a good green apple, let me know! Seriously!

Awesome awesome awesome post.

Let me add/critique a few items based solely on my own palette and experience..

Strawberry is excellent with dark and murky flavors such as tobaccos, chocolates, hazelnuts. Not just fruit alone, but the balance is delicate and takes some work.

Citrus Punch is good but a pain in the ass to blend indeed. I've however had some success with champagne and koolada.

Peanut butter...I don't taste anything but freshly sewn plywood pretty much always and at any percentage. This is definitely a hit or miss flavor. I should try blending it with a small amount of sweet cream to see if it balances.

That's all I've got. Thanks for making a solid contributing post to the sub. The fact that it's from a vendor doesn't hurt at all either.

Edit: one more thing. Banana ripe? 1 drop per 30ml for me adds a nice earthy banana tone to blends for me. 3 per 10 actually sounds insane.

by vapor_trails_nwalmost 11 years ago

I could see the strawberry maybe with a chocolate or tobacco. For me, it just doesn't work with the truly savory flavors like strawberry ripe does. Everyone has a different palette, so really whatever tastes good to you is what it ultimately comes down to.

I like the idea of champagne/koolada added to the dew- I mean citrus punch. I might give that one a go- thank you!

For us, we use about 6 drops per 10 ml, so I need to change the percentages up there- I think I have 1% and up. I think it blends well with the hazlenut flavoring- if you have any, give it a go!

For the banana ripe, we use a decent amount (5 drops per 10 ml and up) on some of our blends. Goldilocks (essentially a TFA banana suicide juice) had 5 drops per 10 ml, and it gave the blend a more "true" banana taste. We also use it in our blend Mr. Smoov, and without enough banana- it just isn't the same! Try it with a few blends, and see what you think. I also like to blend up banana cream + graham cracker (clear) + 1 drop of banana ripe per 10 ml. That is a pretty smooth vape, and I agree with the "less is more" strategy that you take with the banana. Sometimes, I just feel like the blends need a little extra nana!

Great notes! Thanks for the contribution. I was able to pull off a respectable Baja Blast using Citrus Punch at 5% with a touch more lime, a good amount of coconut, and some tropical hints. CP is definitely present but not overpowering at that %.

Thank You! This is exactly the kind of post we need more of on this sub. Do you use multiple flavor vendors? I'm sure all of us here would love to hear your opinion on how TFA flavors match up against other vendors.

3 points

by vapor_trails_nwalmost 11 years ago

We also use Capella Flavor Drops.

Capella has some pretty awesome flavors (Mango, lychee, coconut, cinnamon danish to name a few), but their prices (ugh), as well as their lack of transparency (no information given about acetoin) always make me a bit wary of making a new blend using their gear.

FWIW, they make great fruit blends, but for the price, I would suggest TFA for most of your stuff.

3 points

by SlowMoNoalmost 11 years agoMixologist

I've been meaning to give Capellas a try. Thanks for the info. It's extra appreciated seeing as you're a professional mixologist and all. You guys are out of Oregon right? Go Ducks!

Excellent contribution, when i started i began with flavour art and then went into inawera capella and natures flavors...no good reason why i avoided tfa. Plan on picking up a few soon.

The berry crunch is especially interesting to me, if yoive had other cereal vapes how do they compare to the profile?

3 points

by vapor_trails_nwalmost 11 years ago

Berry crunch is just like the cereal of tries to emulate, but for my tastes, it needs some vanilla/berry/milk to augment what is already there. I do recommend trying it!

3 points

by davidk48almost 11 years ago

Thanks for the writeup! Apparently I've been using way too much hazelnut. As for the blackberry, I've heard that adding a few drops to a blueberry base will add a nice kick to the flavor. I plan on getting a small bottle to try this with blueberry wild, which is great but not very strong.

3 points

by Crylaughingalmost 11 years ago

Blackberry from TFA goes REALLY well with Custard, French Vanilla, Vanillin, and bavarian cream (all TFA, all mixed together). After about 3 weeks it becomes a lusciously thick Blackberry swirl custard, like vanilla custard froyo with some blackberry syrup poured on top. I love it to death and could vape it for days.

Citrus Punch goes REALLY well with some blueberry, raspberry (equal parts). Throw in a hint of coconut and a slightly stronger hint of pineapple and you are heading to Baja country.

2 points

by vapor_trails_nwalmost 11 years ago

Thanks for the tips! I have never been able to get much flavor out of vanillin, maybe mixing it with the other flavors can help bring it out!

Also, I had a baja blend briefly on the site, and I used the blueberry with the dew, and coconut/pineapple from Capella. It wasn't horrible, but something was just off about it. Maybe it was just me!

2 points

by Crylaughingalmost 11 years ago

I think going less blueberry and more blue raspberry is the way to go with the Baja. Some other people use more tropical flavors like mango, but I don't taste that in baja blast.

2 points

by vapor_trails_nwalmost 11 years ago

The raspberry we have (TFA's sweet version) leaves an unpleasant after-taste for me. I have used it before in VERY low percentages. What percentage raspberry would you use- and what vendor's flavoring do you use?

Thanks! Do you guys have a B&M here anywhere, or is online/shipping the only way to get some of your juices?

Shipping is the only way to get our stuff locally (we are looking into some places for a warehouse that could lend as a pickup area). There is a B&M in Albany that carries our blends (iVape Albany), but they are all 50/50, so be aware.

Couldn't agree more on the RY4 Asian. I used to be an RY4 Double fan, but the Asian has that lovely tang, which now i know is actually the honey, so thanks for that alone!

I just wanted to thank you for your post! I use TFA almost exclusively and I have a big bottle of the Banana Cream, I have to use their Cheesecake Graham Crust too. Is it your concerns about acetoine that you didn't include it or their Vanilla Custard, which is another staple of mine? I have read about how they are diacetyl free, but is acetoine considered a carcinogen too? I need to do some research on this because I vape a lot of custard flavors. Thanks Matt, your information is invaluable!

1 points

by vapor_trails_nwover 10 years ago

Acetoin breaks down into small amounts of diacytl. I have read a lot of people saying that there is a potential for lung damage in the long term. That really stinks. Just about anything that has a savory/custardy profile contains acetoin. What's worse, is that many vendors (capella, i'm looking at you) do not even tell us what does contain acetoin and what doesn't. If it tastes too good to be true, it probably is.

1 points

by Poyn2OhmyVaypover 10 years ago

I'm new here, this was my first post, just wanted to thank you for your reply. I think I'll be avoiding the flavorings that contain acetoin. And as far as this being sidebar material, I'm not sure what that means,I apologize for my error, if this information shouldn't be here but in a sidebar. Most vendors who I've talked to, will not even tell you where they get there flavorings, so this is valuable information for the diy.

1 points

by Poyn2OhmyVaypover 10 years ago

Matt I'm surprised to see that you use Capella's flavors. They are known to contain acetoin and probably diacetyl too.

1 points

by vapor_trails_nwover 10 years ago

Well, they have stated that they do not have diacetyl in them, so I took them on their word. The acetoin issue has been shaky with them, though, so we stopped buying cinnamon danish swirl from them.

Almost all of our flavors come from TFA, which is pretty transparent about what they contain, so we try to stick with them.
