Does what this sub has become bother anyone else?
submitted about 11 years ago by iamgr3m

When I first joined this sub was interesting, a little slow, but still intriguing. Almost every post had something useful. It was great.

But lately things have taken a turn for the worse. It seems that every other post is either a "I just got these flavorings can you give me a recipe that uses them?" Or a "blah blah blah by some random mixer that I've only heard of clone" thread. It gets old. Especially when it's the same damn thing everyday. Do people expect the people of this sub to do the work for them?

Cause let's be honest, DIY is not that hard. Do some googling, read the sidebar, find some recipes you like (we have almost a years worth of recipe threads at this point), order some stuff, mix shit together, STEEP your mixes, and vape. That's it. That's all there is to DIY.

Anyone else getting really annoyed by these two things?

Yep. When I came here, I sort of assumed this was a sub full of people who had taken the next step on their own and ventured into DIY - now it's a lot like the ECR sub - lots of "do it for me" posts. It seems to be getting a little better, but...

For the record, I haven't contributed anything really worthwhile myself. But I do try to DIY and read threads and learn on my own instead of having someone else do it for me.

Oh my gosh, me too. This sub and ecr - "do it for me, I can't search or try to figure it out." How lazy it is when people don't even want to READ or look around for answers. Especially in a DIY sub...

1 points

by cwazywabbit74about 11 years ago

Yeah yeah, but come on guys - You guys took that initial plunge as well, and you had your own doubts. I would see it more as folks looking for validation, and maybe some pointers over being 'lazy'.

I honestly almost feel the same way about the "I want to start DIY, what should I buy" threads. There are dozens of these every week, doing a simple search will net answers and choices that those people have made. This includes what to do and what not to do.

I actually had a long conversation with someone in another "clone request" thread last night. I don't know if some understand what it's like to hear these requests over and over again.

People put time and research and hours of trial and error into what they do, not only with mixing juices. It's not people being assholes about sharing information, it's about the fact that if you put hours upon hours, why should someone get something for free with no effort on themselves.

Below is the thread if anyone cares to see what I mean.

I just gave up trying to contribute. I know why your "Apple Cherry RY4 Coffee Caramel Butter Menthol Cotton-Candy Tea" juice you made 5 minutes ago tastes weird and airy but I'll just get downvoted for it and no, adding .2% of Bavarian Cream isn't the solution.

I honestly think you can attribute a lot of it to fear...follow me here people...New vapors that come to this sub...like me...are often exposed to a lot of misinformation about ejuice safety and then screamed at by someone "TO NEVER EVER EVER HANDLE STRAIGHT NICOTINE, IT COULD KILL YOU" and a lot of other BS. I think the "spoon feed me" is more of a "ok guys does this throw up any red flags to the more experienced guys?" I agree that laziness is annoying, but seriously the side bar, while informative, doesn't really spell it all out like a safety conscience slightly OCD vapor looking to save money by making their own juice would like... just my 2 Lincoln's

EDIT: That Grammer thing

2 points

by iamgr3mabout 11 years ago

Grammar :p

I think people go overboard with the fear mongering of handling nic. I only use gloves, never used an apron or safety goggles or a ventilation mask. Apron and a ventilation mask seems too extreme, we're making ejuice not meth know what I mean? Just open your nic when it's time to add it, and close it after you measure it. Less chance of it spilling that way and reduces its exposure to air which should lessen how much it oxidizes.

2 points

by SumDudeYouKnowabout 11 years ago

Gloves can actually be harmful when they are used unnecessarily. When you get 100mg nicotine on your hands, you usually make a move for the sink to wash it off. As long as you wash it off relatively quickly, you won't even feel the effects. But when you wear gloves and get nicotine on them, you tend to ignore it and then spread 100mg nicotine onto everything you touch.

Don't get it in your eyes or mouth, and don't breath the fumes. Other than that, 100mg nic is not going to hurt you unless you bathe in it and don't wash it off.

It's a sub for DIY fans. It's where you'd come to discuss DIY shit. Avoid and hide the posts you don't want to talk in. Others just might.

The meta posts and complaint posts are more annoying.

Every sub gets whiny.

by Marikc1about 11 years agoMixologist

You're on Reddit...

99% of the posts on this site are pathetic, pointless, not funny, not entertaining and basically amount to "Hi, I'm taking a piss right now" posts and 99% of Reddit votes up that post and anyone who thinks it isn't the greatest damn thing ever posted by man on the Internet is a troll.

This sub is the least of your worries. While I agree people shouldn't buy random flavors and ask what to do with them, there's nothing wrong with getting critique on the combination of those flavors that they are using and how to improve them. That is the very point of a DIY forum of any kind.

Except it's sad that's what Reddit has become .. coming from someone who's been here for most of it.

My account's only six years old, but I was a lurker with no account for about a year or so before that as well.

The userbase in general has just really gone downhill, I assume that happens with anything that increases in popularity.

Also digg closing and all those idiots from Youtube coming over, Reddit being mentioned in popculture, etc etc etc.

You can blame the moderators and admins for that entirely. They encourage it and do nothing to change it. Allowing people to post such ridiculous content on this site is its downfall.

Okay you guys are totally off topic, but anyway... I've heard that for years and I'll always say the same thing :

Reddit isn't about Reddit. It's about the subreddits. If you browse shitty subs, you're going to find shitty content.

You'll only find quality on my front page, from 70+ subreddits, with a great user-base.

Reddit is all about what you want after the /r/.

guilty! Still waiting on the flavors i ordered to arrive and put out a feeler to see if anyone had put together an impearmint clone. I think you need to look at things at a more elemental level, there are people that come here to learn and maybe craft the next nannerbear and eventually will be helping others do the same but there are also people who come here to save money who will start off with clones whilst they get a feel for it(some of which may go on to crafting there own blends and sharing tips) in the end most on ECR and the subreddits are just people trying not to smoke/die. The community is getting larger by the day and includes lots of different types of vaper from the subohm is god elitist to the ego newbie. Maybe you should lighten up take a big hit of your no doubt awesome homemade sauce

I disagree that DIY is not that hard. It can be and has a learning curve. We are all unique snowflakes that have very specific tastes. I personally got into DIY for one reason, to clone a few juices that I was tired of spending, what I felt, too much money on. I vape about 5 ml of juice a day, and if I'm buying premium juice thats $15 for 15 ml, shit, I might as well go back to smoking at those prices. So I tried my hand at DIY but honestly, anything beyond a single flavor I just couldn't get to taste like anything but sweet air. As a last ditch effort, I just decided to get a bunch of bottles of Mt Baker Vapor flavors and mix them at 12.5%. Easy peasy. Tastes exactly like it and Im saving a shit ton of money. I'm vaping to quit smoking. The best way to keep me from smoking is to have great tasting juice. DIY for me did not produce great tasting juice even after fucking around with it for months. This sub gets blasted with clone threads because that's the first thing people are looking to do when they get into DIY. I have a lot of respect for the people here that can spend weeks messing around with percentages to get their custom flavor just perfect, but I got a habit to kick.

With that being said... I got a box full of flavors that I'm looking to give away but want to have some kind of contest, any ideas?

When people say DIY isn't that hard is usually referring to the physical act of mixing. I say the same thing, but always with the caveat that figuring out the percentages is where it gets tricky and take a lot more work. It is all very simple to do, but complex to get working right at times.

I've been mostly a stalker on this sub, while asking about recommendations for certain flavors.

I've taken a few recipes off this and followed them to create some of the most amazing things I've ever tried.

I've just started to try to make a Cactus Juice clone, and figuring out what is in it has become a chore. Perhaps I'm not cut out for this line of work! That being said, I've wanted to come to this sub to ask for help on it at least 4 times a week the last month, but didn't because I was afraid I would be bugging other members about a juice no one has tried.

Ended up ordering one stop DIY shop Cactus Cooler flavor mix, and it's pretty close.

3 points

by scoopylooabout 11 years ago

Noooooooooooooooooo, you've tried to figure it out, so that's not what we're talking about - asking would be completely appropriate! You could post what you've tried so far and ask for a little help with the tweaking - that's sort of what this sub is great for. Because you TRIED! It's the flat out, lazy people who don't even BOTHER to read threads or the sidebar and learn and try that are getting ridiculous.

How many posts are there that ask where to buy stuff, or what to get? Holy smokes, I learned what to get for my first order by just reading here and seeing what people say about places they've ordered from or what they've tried! If there's a flavor that I want to buy, I search this sub, and also search google - example: blueberry - search here and google "blueberry" and do some reading, then make a decision about what to try first.

But your question is totally acceptable and understandable - people here like to take on the challenge too, when someone has started a recipe and needs some help with it. :)

2 points

by TheSlovakabout 11 years ago

Honestly, as long as you mention what sort of recipe you're thinking of using or any that you've tried so people can see where your coming from I think you would be fine posting. The frustration that many people on here have is from the posts where no information is given beyond "help me."

This thread sounds like "I remember when this was all fields" moan.

Vaping has grown exponentially over the past year or so. Of course this sub is going to be different, because there are far more people vaping, and far more interested in DIY.

I do understand, but I think the best solution is new subs. There are people at very different skill levels asking a lot of very different questions.

Most reddit subs (hobbies, diets, exercise, etc) are so intolerant of simple questions - most replies to questions that are obvious or lazy, are replied to with, "READ THE SIDE BAR!!!!!!! --------------->" - they don't even bother to try to answer the questions, because the information is all over the sub. And I understand why.

I'm very new to DIY. Started vaping a year ago and fell off the wagon for couple months. I have been vaping with no cigs for 62 days. The only reason I want to DIY is because when I order something from a vendor and it doesn't taste anything like it is suppose to taste like pisses me off. One vendor had a flavor I liked that was blueberry with honey first time I got it I loved it the 2nd I ordered a 30ml bottle for 13 dollars and it tasted like they just cut it with base liquid. I also leave my "look at what I got" to my states vape club facebook. I have kinda of an idea of what I want to make but I lack the skills in mixing and being able to tell different flavors in a juice like a lot of other people. In glad this place exists because the side bar is awesome resource. I did ask for a clone of enter the dragon by Gemini vapor hope I didn't offend lol.

As someone that has lurked here for a month or so, and just received and mixed a bunch of tasty juice in the past week I couldn't be on board with this post any more. It literally takes no more than a couple of hours to figure out what juice you like and what you need to get in order to achieve those flavor profiles.

The amount of content on getting started here is huge. I wish the discussion was more in line with experimenting and less "tell me what to do" type of posts.

This is reddit however, and I guess sifting through the shit is part of it.

I'm a little late to the party here and I haven't been active in diy lately at all because I've been busy building mods but I'm still subbed here and plan on getting back into diy as soon as I get a break. But I saw this topic and wanted to point out that it's a common laziness that seems to be all across any kind of diy vaping forums. I see people posting the dumbest questions over on /r/openpv and seem so unwilling to learn when you give them an answer because it's not what they wanted to hear. Even when the topic was previously discussed in multiple threads, the same question will be over and over. The mods actually banned the topic of mechanical box mods because of rampant stupidity and the continous posts on the subject. So it seems to be common to have these threads taking over in multiple forums.

I have noticed that too. I'm looking to buy some kind of new tank - not sure what I want to get, or what would be good at this point. But what I'll do, is go thumbing through threads, searching in ECR and Google, do a little more research, then go for what sounds good to me. These, "What should I get?" threads show not a lack of knowledge, experience, or information - it shows flat out laziness.

by TheSlovakabout 11 years ago

Something I was discussing with someone last week on here was maybe keeping a FAQ stickied instead of the monthly recipe thread. Keep posting the links in the sidebar for the monthlies, though, so they are still easy to find. Also, I know /u/bluesed would be ecstatic if Flavour Art and Inawera were added to the vendor lists on the sidebar.

1 points

by kirktabout 11 years agoBring on the Diacetyl, baby

Yeah, FAQ is a big undertaking. A community wiki might be easier - thoughts?

Also, send me links (I'm lazy) and when I get time I'll add them. I promised Nude Nicotine a link a while ago so I'll do all the edits at once.

1 points

by TheSlovakabout 11 years ago

Only problem I can think of for linking FA and Inawera is that they are European vendors and there are multiple resellers here in the US, and none of them carry the full line from either. Unless there is a second set of links for aggregate vendors.... Don't know how cluttered that would make the sidebar, though.

A wiki might work a bit better than a FAQ. There was a part in the last week from someone talking about setting up a user created wiki. And one spanning here, ECF and other forums. Might make it easier for our forum here that way, and also bring in other ideas, tips and tricks.

I wonder if the banner at the top of the subreddit style actually encourages clone requests. I realize it's meant to be facetious and all, but still.

2 points

by kirktabout 11 years agoBring on the Diacetyl, baby

It's a sardonic comment on the very complaint this post adresses.

1 points

by Anaxagoras23about 11 years ago

Right and I get that, but at the same time I meant perhaps it normalizes clone requests? (And oh god I sound like ANTZ.) To the people who already get it it's fairly obvious, but to people who are looking to get into DIY they're probably thinking of making the things they buy from other people, then they look at the subreddit and think "Oh well I'll ask them".

Anywho back to lurking.

by overachieverabout 11 years ago

How about a bot that removes clone request posts and redirect the poster to the clone thread?

2 points

by kirktabout 11 years agoBring on the Diacetyl, baby

The clone thread (now 6 months old so no posts are allowed) specifically forbids clone requests.

Problem is, very few posters here buy juice anymore so don't really work on clones. Should we ban clone requests altogether?

Also, the clone thread was great for the first couple of months, then died off. Would you like to see a Clone Thread 2?

1 points

by overachieverabout 11 years ago

The clone thread is a great resource and it's what help me get started (2 of my ADVs now are from that thread!). For newbies, it is often difficult to know what flavours goes with what as there are so many choices and that thread was great as you can scan it and go "ooooh I had that juice before and it was great, I'll give that recipe a try".

It's a shame that no posts are allowed on that thread any more and it'd be great if we can get clone thread 2 going. Your concerns about the potential lack of content is valid but we won't know if we don't try.

1 points

by 3tern1tyabout 11 years agoMixologist

I'm still a cloner... I still buy juice specifically to clone. What I don't do is post "ZOMG I LOVE THIS JUICE GIVE ME CLONE RECIPE NAOW PLZ" I will work out what I imagine is the closest to it, then ask for other to mix and give me input on their interpretation of the flavor.

Since every palate is different, crowdsourcing help through this sub is probably the easiest/fastest way to get to a decent clone. So, regardless if anyone bans clone requests, I'll still post clone threads.

1 points

by ErsatzSemblanceabout 11 years ago

Do you mean the clone thread that has been sitting for about 4 months without a post or is there another clone thread that I am missing?

1 points

by kirktabout 11 years agoBring on the Diacetyl, baby

That's the one. Was it a good idea, one we should repeat?

1 points

by TheSlovakabout 11 years ago

The clone threads have always been here. There are more now than there used to be, yes, but are nothing new. Same with people asking with help for mixes.

The main difference seems to be now that it is less of people posting what they've made and how to improve it versus asking for how to do things from the ground up. I think part of that reason is look at how many premium vendors have popped up over this past year. And non-premium as well. Many people, I'm sure, assume mixes have to be 8+ flavors to compete with the rumors of TVC's 15 flavor blends. This isn't the case, honestly.

I'll admit to not always posting as much as I used to in here. A big part of that is due to people asking for help on flavors I'm not that familiar with, honestly. And, yeah, I'm not as likely to help someone out unless they mention a mix or two that they have tried, or what they are planning on trying. Unless it already happens to be something I was kicking around anyway.

1 points

by diabeoabout 11 years ago

I am going to start making my own juice soon(doing research and reading up on flavors and mixes before I order anything) and I really don't want to be "that guy". Because of this post I will do my best to not cloud (pun intended) this sub with flavor help requests. I think this sub is cool and I like being able to read about the trouble people are having with flavors and mixing and steeping because it educates me on what not to do.

I guess... thank you?.. for helping the nubiles like myself have awareness of annoying posting habbits?.. yea. That.

1 points

by JimmyMonetabout 11 years ago

So what do you recommend? I agree that the "here's what I got, what can I do" posts are essentially worthless but, beyond the clone recipe requests, what other kind of content is there for a sub like this?

I really only keep subbed here for the recipes I don't know what other information I would expect to be on this sub except maybe some info about new vendors but AFAIK that doesn't really happen all that often.

Am I missing something is there more to DIY ejuice than the recipes?

1 points

by iamgr3mabout 11 years ago

There was even a post that didn't disclose what flavors they got but wanted recipes for what they got -_-

If someone is working on a recipe or wants to clone a juice, has a start, but wants input I don't have a problem with that. But the "need a clone of "sugar daddy" by random vendor guy" without flavor profiles posts are annoying.

1 points

by scoopylooabout 11 years ago

I read through the old threads - like the really old ones when this sub got started. And it seemed like the sub was full of people who decided to take the intitiative and try DIY - then the thread topics were more like a group of people who bounced ideas off of each other after trying flavors or recipes, or whatever - they'd already took the time to put some effort in, and THEN discussed issues or recipes, etc about DIY.

1 points

by cwazywabbit74about 11 years ago

Also to note here folks - taste is perception to some degree. I've been mixing for maybe 9-10 months at this point (thanks to this sub). I mix for myself, and I've wholesale distributed some of my mixtures. While I agree with you (OP) to most of what you are saying, I think this sub (just like any DIY sub on Reddit) eventually just becomes exactly what you stated. That's not to say that new flavors will not continue to emerge, steeping methods become discovered and so on.

The most ironic thing I have come to realize (completely honest) - After a while a lot of what we make just tastes the same.
