It's pretty new right now but now that I've got the login issue I was facing resolved it's about time I offered the link to the community so that we can get things started.
I'm hoping to get some discussion going on what kind of format you'd want to see and what would work best.
What I'm thinking are a couple main headers.
-
First would be the safety information that any user would need to know including things like proper handling of the ingredients, reports about what nicotine toxicity is and how to treat it (in case someone somehow gets a splash of full-strength nic-liquid on their skin and what the signs and symptoms of nicotine toxicity are.) Mainly so that users that are interested in getting into it will know how to properly handle these things as well as why proper safety handling is important.
-
Second I'd like to have a resource for basic mixing and calculators (either how to do the math yourself or where you can go for a calculator to do the math for you.)
-
Third I'd like to have recipes... This could be user-submitted but as it is a wiki it would be a place to have discussions and suggestions and alterations listed below.
-
Fourth would be to have specific flavour listings... Sorted by vendor (alphabetically so as to prevent bias) and also with things like what flavour does what... how that flavour can interact, whether it's more of an inhale-vs-exhale dominant flavour, what too much or too little will result in... That kinda thing.
I don't think it would be appropriate to have a "making your own coils" or "hardware review" section since that's kinda off topic... But maybe there could be room in there if it's a matter of some hardware being notorious for doing things to the flavour (so, say it's a kanger single-coil setup... they can sometimes reduce the flavour if they're not at the right setting.) But, that said, this would be more about the liquids and less about the hardware so hardware reviews would be discouraged.
What say you? This is totally fresh and new so it's very rough right now but right now I'd like some discussion on what you'd like to see in how it's structured, how the submission guidelines are set up, that kinda thing... A way to get the foundation set up well so that it's both easy to use and easy to post.
Also, I think that if there's going to be a clone recipe... Out of courtesy to the people that created it initially there should be a link to their company or site so that users can purchase it there if they aren't interested in cloning it. This would be mostly a courtesy and to help prevent bad-blood from brewing between the site and the vendors.
I would like to encourage you to add your own content as well... I cannot devote all my time to this and I do not have experience with every possible flavour or recipe.
I know that this will grow as we contribute both to the content and the way that it's presented... But right now it's not comprehensive. That's why I'm coming to the community here to help flesh it out so that it CAN be more comprehensive and help other DIYers make informed choices.
Nice! Bookmarked and will contribute.
Thank you kindly!
And if you have any thoughts on how you'd like to see it structured, organized, etc... feel free to say something. This is a new thing so it's in it's infancy but I suspect if the interest and community effort is there, it could grow to something much better than what it is now.
Fantastic idea. I agree with all but 1 of your header suggestions (I'll get to that...) and would also like you to consider main headers of:
- common equipment (safety, bottles, syringes, scales, graduated beakers/cylinders, stir plates, ultrasonic cleaners, and so on)
- mixing/steeping techniques (different ways we use said equipment)
- maybe a list of suppliers/reseller that sell multiple brands of bases/flavorings/nic, similar to the content provided here.
I really like the idea of tasting notes for each individual flavor, but I might be a little hesitant to have recipes on the wiki though...there are already so many recipe sites that I feel like it would be unnecessarily redundant and would probably provide no unique features that make it stand out from what's already available. Maybe I'm missing something though...
Definitely a good idea. I am still not 100% sure how I want the flavours to be handled either so having it be something like a "French Vanilla" and in that one have a sub-header for each different vendor's version (TFA vs Capella vs Others etc.) And in the index have a spot for links where you can go to the vendors themselves or to other people (reputed to be of good quality... none of this skeezy stuff like ebay or whatever... respected, reputable vendors.)
That said, it could be more simple to have a "French Vanilla" and in there have links to the separate versions (TFA, Capella, etc.) so that's why I'm totally for the formatting being up for review as well... I would like to make this simple and easy to use like a good wiki should because if this DOES become a very well used resource with a lot of contributors it kinda has to be solidly put together given there are thousands of different flavours out there.
And if you have an idea for a section or a category that you feel would be absolutely necessary, feel free to add one. I'm going to see about setting aside a couple hours every day or so to add, tweak and such and I'm only one person... But the strength of it being a wiki is that it can be contributed to by pretty much anyone.
If you want to do this within reddit, we (mods) can set it up. Your call though.
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AkX4_hQ6Fu8HdEwwR2dLRUJlVjlabEN1NG1ucktuUVE&gid=0 Perhaps this is a good resource. The classic spreadsheets of flavors. I am not too sure about the authorship, rights, feelings, and how up to date it may be.
Hmm, I'll see about contacting them if I can (might have to get a friend that speaks German to help me out with translating to find the admin of that spreadsheet.)
Thank you! This is kinda what I'm talking about for the flavour profile part (though I do want to make it a little more descriptive... So, "This is a flavour that has a pleasantly sweet taste, smooth and luscious on the inhale at the right proportions." kinda deal... A sort of food-critic kind of approach is what I'd love to see there so that the people can give a detailed description of their impressions of the flavour.)
