Can I just say something about requests?
submitted over 11 years ago by IAmTheBADASS

It is getting a little out if hand. There's are tons f posts asking "can some clone X juice for me?"

All of you need to try it for yourself. Having something handed to you does nothing, and a lot of people aren't going to try to clone a juice that they don't like, or haven't heard of.

A better idea is to try it for yourself, and then asking "hey guys, I tried to clone X juice, and I've got X so far, what are some suggestions on things I could try?"

That would probably get more responses than 0.

Maybe I am the only one, but I find this many posts about the same thing annoying.

Never hurts to ask. Aren't we all willing to help others out with what we have learned? If you research and can't find it.....ASK Someone. I thought that's one of the main reasons this site existed. People word it a bit forward, like "does anyone have a clone of BLA BLA" but what they are really asking is advice on how they go about cloning it and looking for input on flavors they need. I see no harm in asking, and am more than happy to help or hinder with my limited knowledge.

I'm very willing to help, but I think there are a select few who expect others to do the work for them. It's not a huge problem at all, most are willing to learn and try themselves. It's really a non issue. This thread seems to be venting more than a "PSA".

yea, true. I don't see the same person asking over and over, I believe that with vaping getting more and more popular it gonna keep happening as folks try to save $. If they simply "read the sidebar" then they would probably never ask for recipes...just assistance in perfecting them or figuring out what went wrong.

Really? That is exactly what a forum like this is for, discovering and sharing our recipes. As well as giving advice about various aspects of the hobby and tips on shopping for supplies. To me this includes both the asking part and the helping part.

This is just being pretentious now. I've asked for a clone/recipe/advice here and that makes me annoying? I haven't even tried to make my favorite flavor yet because no one here had any idea, or possibly like you decided I was annoying and decided not to help. But you would give me your wisdom if I just fail first and ask for help after admitting to my 6 batches of unvapable garbage that may not even contain one appropriate flavoring?

I find your post angering. "How dare you ask if anyone has a tried and tested recipe for 'X' flavor BEFORE trying it from scratch yourself and on a forum where people are here to discuss of all things recipes for flavors!"

And just for the hell of it I'm going to ask you for advice. Bamskilicious E-juice is my favorite vendor sadly it's not available in Canada anymore. I can get it shipped from California but it costs $60.00 per 30 ml, a little steep for me. My favorite juice from him, actually my favorite juice period, is Venom.

It is described as "a cool fruit mix flavor with a different twist." It smells like one of those old school Binaca breath sprays, it doesn't taste like one but it smells like it to me. What I know about this juice is there some mix of fruit flavors in it and apparently the mint/cooling comes from spearmint. The actual juice is sweet to the taste if you lick it off your finger, the ingredients list Sucralose so I am guessing there is a decent amount of it in the juice, but I don't actually know that.

My palette or tasting skills or what ever you call it is not advanced enough and never will be to pick out the fine notes of what fruits I should start with. What I need is a start and somebody will have to give it me because in all honesty I have no idea where to begin. I can tweak, experiment add or remove flavors and change the recipe as I see fit after I start but until someone spoon feeds me a beginning I'm lost. If this is not the place for me to ask for that help then I need to find a different forum for DIY Ejuice.

I want to be able to ask this question!

Anyone got a Bamskilicious Venom recipe? Anything remotely close would help. Thanks in advance friends!

But some aren't even trying. Not even a little bit, and then asking for someone to take the time and supplies to do the work for them.

I would agree there is a big difference between "anyone got a recipe for 'x'" and "hey guys go figure out 'x'."

I would think though, just like me with my request its not that people are unwilling to work at it. Just that they have no clue where to even begin. Or maybe that they know the flavors but really want to know what brands of flavoring people are using and good starting %.

For my request I don't expect you or anyone to go to work for me. I just want that if you have a recipe or something similar for you to share it. Or even the simple advice of maybe try starting with a base of flavors x,y and z and see what you think. If I tried i would literally just be throwing darts and I'm not very good at darts. It is also worth noting that I currently have 25 darts (30 when my next order arrives) and they can all be used at varying percentages and there are 100s more of these darts on the market.

We've had SO many threads that start out with requests for recipes, but in those threads they OP never says, "I was thinking about starting with _____" or "I've tried this, this and this, but it's just not right..." so it seems that they're just tossing out ideas but want other people to do it for them. And part of this DIY is actually trying to do it yourself.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't help each other, but a little effort on behalf of the person making the request would probably go a long way.

And some just want to jump in and duplicate a vendor's recipes without ever having attempted doing this before. Maybe they should start with something simple, or a recipe from the side bar, and go from there. It's like in ECR when people come there and say, "Never smoked before, never vaped, want to blow big clouds and get a mech mod and start rebuilding. Show me how!" Well, sometimes a person has to take a little initiative and read through threads and learn stuff, and start where they should: at a beginner level, before going into intermediate or advanced. KWIM?

I'm NOWHERE near even intermediate at DIY, but I read practically every thread, and learn what I can, and experiment - this is a hobby that is about experimenting, not having someone do it all for you. Asking for an idea of where to start, but showing that you've given it some thought or attempt yourself is a lot better than just expecting full service from a sub of people who are also experimenting and doing it themselves.

I'm not trying to sound bitchy, but that's sort of how it seems lately in here with all of the requests, and no other input or participation.

So lets make this simple for you. Requesting clones of juices is pointless here. Why? Because the people that would be able to help have been making their own juice for years and no longer buy juice for the most part. So we have no idea what most of these juices taste like and that's why the clone threads go unanswered. I'm sorry but you are in it alone and you will have to put in the work that we all did when we started out. You can't start at the finish.

Your tasting skills are not advanced enough because you have to expose yourself to as many flavors as you can. To build up your flavor database you need to start buying tons of sample bottles of flavoring. I have been at it for over two years now. When I try a vendor made juice most of the time I can identify the flavorings they used. So it's going to take some time, money, and a lot of work to get to your goal.

Here is the bad part, after you get to the point that you can identify all the flavors in venom you will probably not be very interested in that juice anymore. You most likely will have found so may other mixes that you like better. The same exact thing happened to me.

Requesting clones / recipes is not pointless. Why? Because people almost always help here. I just opened the first 5 or 6 recipe / clone requests and everyone one of them had a helpful piece of advice inside. 100% of them received help. You are absolutely and demonstrably wrong, the worst kind of wrong. I have only been here a month maybe they used to always go unanswered and with out any helpful advice, but that is not the case lately.

I won't say for sure that you are wrong or not about my taste skills developing, but I seriously doubt the notion that they will. I have been eating all my life, I can't leave a fancy restaurant with a good idea of what was in the sauce. I could how ever look up a recipe and let things expand for there.

Your bad part doesn't sound bad to me at all. Even if I were to be handed an exact recipe to the manufactures specs of venom. I would mix up 10 mls or so, vape it, think about the flavors used and in a few days mix up 3 or 4 variants of that recipe that I thought would improve it. Every single time I have mixed something even when duplicating the ones I liked I usually change or add something just to see how it turns out.

You're a bit of a hothead aren't you? That's not a bad thing. People say the same about me. It just means that you are passionate about the subject. I'd rather have one passionate person on my side than an army of the apathetic.

As for me being demonstrably wrong, I'm glad that I am wrong. I'm glad you proved me wrong. It makes me feel better about the people on this sub. It does make me feel worse that I disregarded their plea for help. I still don't understand what help I could offer? Maybe you could link to the posts and enlighten me? Because like others I am here to help anyway I can.

On your tasting skills developing, you can trust this internet stranger when I say that they will. The example you gave is perfect for me because I can go to a restaurant and figure out what is in the sauce. Cooking was my first hobby and remains a passion for me today. Your pallet does evolve the more you experiment with ingredients, flavor profiles, and the techniques used in the culinary arts. I treat mixing juice the same way that I approach cooking. I try every single variant of a vegetable or protein, cooking them with different techniques and at different temperatures until I get the optimum results. I spent a month looking for the absolute best canned tomatoes when locally sourced fresh tomatoes are not available (Muir Glen Organic BTW). So in this example being a cook is to mixing juice where eating food is to consuming eliquid. Your example in fact proves my point.

You comments on the "bad part" are spot on. It's the same realization that I came to after it was all said and done.

So using your logic, everyone should never try making any juice, we should jut all use recipes from the Internet?

How in the world that is what you got out of reading that post is amazing to me. I never even hinted at anything of the sort. I have tried many things on my own some of which are great some not so much. I have followed recipes that I hated and one that I loved after a few of my own personal tweaks. I posted one of my own recipes to the May thread as well as how I tweaked the existing recipe that I liked.

The point of my post is with that particular recipe I have no idea where to begin. I may as well ask random people off the street to come into my house and give it a go.

If this is not a place where it is acceptable to ask for help starting a recipe and only for help finishing a recipe I don't want to be here.

If using your logic got you to that response, here is some free advice, you should always do the opposite of what you think is logical.

Maybe I wasn't speaking of your post?

But just today I have seen 2 posts that just said " anyone have a clone of X"

Not "I need help with a starting point"

This is Do it yourself not just "copy shit off the Internet" it is about LEARNING.

It's a combination of being lazy/poor. The request threads are a waste of time anyway, I have yet to see one be fulfilled. Even if one is fulfilled, how much time do you think will be put in the recipe?

Perhaps a better idea would be to start a discussion on what MIGHT be in a flavor and do some of the legwork from there.

Or you can pay me. I'll make any juice you want if you pay me.

I might just. What's your rate?

by UltimateOreoover 11 years agoMixologist

I suppose it would depend on the complexity of the flavor.

I certainly don't care. I can't help anyone with a clone but I don't begrudge someone asking for something handed to them.

I'm not here to learn how to juice or experiment or clone anything. I'm here because I'm cheap.

I also use allrecipes.com and epicurious.com when I want to cook something. People who want to share post their stuff and people like me cook it. Seems to work for those sites.

I never found a pre-mixed flavor I liked enough to be concerned with trying to clone it and I've never even looked at a recipe. I pretty much know what flavors I like and enjoy making my own concoctions...to me, following someones recipe is kinda like "painting by numbers" ...hell I just as well be buying pre-made

by DoubleSuitedAKJ10over 11 years ago

What brings you here? I mean you know your flavors, following someone else's recipe is shameful. Need advice on where to buy bottles and syringes? Maybe you are just here to gloat or share your superior recipes and mock people as all us plebeians follow the recipes you post.

-3 points

by Bluesedover 11 years ago

I don't post my recipes and I have plenty of vials and syringes. If you don't know your flavors, you'll never learn to mix anything on your own. That's the fun part of diy...experimenting with different flavor combinations and percentages. I get no satisfaction in someone else doing my work and won't be asking either.

So what brings you here? You don't want advice, you don't give advice. You don't share your recipes or care for other peoples recipes.

I think its just to laugh at those of us that don't know what they are doing.

I completely agree. This is more true for us I think as most tobaccos are utter shit.

Someone should make a clone request subreddit. I do think some learning can take place especially if it allows someone to make their first "good" juice... This trend of noobs on message boards in general can get quite old...

3 points

by DoubleSuitedAKJ10over 11 years ago

Yea screw those guys who don't know where the hell they are doing! And the nerve of those damn noobs asking for help on DIY-eJuice!

"A place to find and share juice recipes, tips, and tricks!"

by swancitysoundsover 11 years ago

I think the OP or at least my thought is it is diminishing the quality of this sub having clone this or clone that I can't afford the orig. True learning would come from actual discourse about actually making juice. You know, exchanging ideas and knowledge. Not just lazy people asking for clone recipes of this or that. It gets really old when you want to go to a sub to actually learn something and it is all littered with these kinds of requests. I am not opposed to requests personally but at a certain quantity seems to create a snowball effect, especially when a lot of these people could just use the Search function or google . :) :) :) :) :)

by DoubleSuitedAKJ10over 11 years ago

The search has been pretty horrendous for me on reddit. Maybe it's better now but I doubt it. Maybe they did search various sources and found no help. I have for 1 recipe, searched every source I could find on the topic, and am still lost.

Also the front page has 3 requests for help making a clone. I think there is 25 posts on a page 3 for 25 doesn't seem to be bringing the quality down to much to me. Maybe when it gets to 10+ or more of the posts every day something might need to be done. Like a request help reddit.

It's not very hard to ignore a couple posts you have no interest in contributing to or reading. When the overwhelming majority of posts are asking for the same thing, you may find me on the OP's side.
