DIY eJuice Recipes Subreddit
submitted over 11 years ago by luke3br

After browsing lots of DIY recipe sites, and this subreddit, it just seems like nobody is really actively using anything in particular (if you all are, please update me with what you use) for recipe voting and submission.
Yes I find plenty of recipes, but individual recipes with actual votes on them to confirm the deliciousness of the recipe are few and far between.

I'd like to suggest, or maybe see if there is interest in starting another subreddit specific to recipes.

I think the reddit platform would work well for this, and adding flair options to the post would allow for more categorization (flavor brands, recipe type eg Drink food candy etc, and more) which would be plenty for the needs I've been looking for on a DIY recipe platform.

Furthermore, starting other sites entirely is a pain to get users for, because who likes making yet another internet account when this can be avoided.

Thoughts, opinions?

EDIT: If I should start it, great, if someone else wants to start it, great... I just would like to get something going.

EDIT2: I'll get one started later on today, and get some people who are interested in being mods from here.
If you know CSS and/or would like to be one of the mods, pm me.. Will probably pick around 3-5 mods

EDIT3: I just registered /r/eJuice_recipes/

EDIT4: The subreddit is up and running, although in its early stages obviously.
/u/InertiaCreeping from here in /r/DIY_eJuice has agreed to be a moderator over there as well.

I agree that the voting and feedback on the many many recipes all over is the single biggest weakness everywhere. Below are just some of the sites dedicated to exactly that, but there is very little feedback on any of them. In addition, there are tons over on ECF. I don't know what the answer is and I don't care what site is used but if we as a group could all agree upon one and put all feedback there it would be a huge step forward.

There are a couple hundred members on 99Juices, a lot of whom keep coming back... I think if people start testing / reviewing / following each other it could be pretty rad.

Some people are really talented at making recipes, so I imagine they could build some type of following on the site if people start trying it out. If not, at least there are plenty of recipes to choose from :)

I would be in favor of a DIY recipe subreddit. I think that what is really lacking in DIY eliquid recipe sites is two things. One, standardization of the ingredients (Oh it has watermelon at 6%? which watermelon? there's 15 different vendors and they each have their own watermelon which varies wildly in strength from one to the other) and two, a large enough community that allows for an actual weight when rating how much a recipe is liked. Sure, a lot of the sites have a rating system, but most of the 5 star review from 1 dude back in 2011 doesn't mean much to me. Of course taste is subjective but there is a reason a lot of people like Mothers Milk or Grants Vanilla Custard.

I think that both of these issues could be addressed in Reddits format with the simple upvote/downvote of the entire recipe thread and being able to reference inside the thread suggested refinements or substitutions that people need for the flavorings they currently own. For example, I want to try these recipes but how much Blueberry Extra TFA do I use when the recipe calls for Blueberry LorAnns? And how does that interact with the other ingredients that showed up to the party?

If it's done, it should be done with very clear submission guidelines in terms of naming flavor vendor, percentages, pg/vg ratio used, steep time if any, and any other additives.

I'd be happy to help get it off the ground.

Maybe a little off topic but in regards to your comment about 6% watermelon. I'd love it if someone may a spreadsheet comparing the different flavoring companies flavoring strength. Like 5% TFA watermelon is about the same as 3% flavorwest watermelon(just an example not actually true).

I agree 100% and was thinking over everything you mentioned here.

Specifically having clear submission guidelines so that it doesn't become a huge un-orderly mess.

And one example of what I'm talking about is this thread here on reddit

A bunch of recipes all piled into one post and/or comment....

an upvote on that post isn't going to mean much, because I'm probably not going to try every single recipe and flavor in that post, and I'm looking for something that I can try that maybe a few others users have tried and have good things to say about it.

EDIT: so if every recipe had its own comment in that thread, maybe that would work better for me IRL.

Problem with that is after so long reddit archives threads and stops you from commenting and voting

Too bad I just made that thread my homepage so I'll have it FOREVER

Well really good recipes can live on through the archives, and even through resubmission if more needs to be mentioned about the recipe, or anything of the like.

I think we should start here, and eventually, if it needs it, get another site going using reddits oauth to incorporate.

I wish reddit had an oauth API so you wouldn't have to create another account. Twitter, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn et al have such APIs, but I'd much prefer to use my comparatively more anonymous reddit account to authenticate on sites.

Actually.... Reddit does have oauth.

Oh yeah, I've kind of been thinking that this sub is more of a meta-sub for the sub you're starting... Linear time is so disorganized...
