This is the true rabbit hole of vaping
submitted over 11 years ago by oldmanskillz

I just started mixing not too terribly long ago and probably have 2000ml of various finished(?) concoctions laying around, not counting the flavors 'in progress'! Just sharing my pain #firstworldproblem. I can't be the only one who winds up with waaaaaaaaayyyyyy more liquid than I'll ever vape. Even when I find an amazing result I STILL want to tweak it, improve it, change the viscosity / nic level or something.

My favorite base currently is sort of an horchata cream - of which I have no less than 6 variants. Wtf? I used to work in restaurants and love cooking playing with flavors, thought it was a great segue. But it's like cooking food you don't get to stuff your face with when you're done. Just a cupboard full of possibilities. It kind of bums me out TBH.

/rant thanks for letting me vent :D

I had to tell myself "only two mixes at a time, and you don't make another until one of them is either finished or discarded."

It helps to limit how many bottles you have to put it in.

this, limiting the bottles you have makes it a LOT easier not to go crazy

I have 5. Two little 5mL for experiments, a couple of 10mL for things that I'm sure of but want to test for more than a couple days, and one 30mL for RY4, since it's the only thing I KNOW I want in a large volume. :)

What is RY4? Sorry, I am new to this stuff.

I'm looking forward to trying TFA's Horchata Smooth, I've never drunk Horchata, but it reminds me of rice pudding

Heheheh, I'm totally on the same page as you. Especially the "Always wanting to tinker with them."

And yeah, I've got about 10 little bottles with a couple mls each of test blends. The biggest hurdle I've found when finding a good mix is gauging what it's going to taste like after steeping. I've got two bottles of a test liquid that I've been nursing that have just the right balance of flavours in them but I want to push them to a long-term steeping before I commit to making larger quantities of them. Mainly because I've noticed that some flavourings will drastically alter how things go. Some fruits fade fast, some will fade in and others stay relatively consistent. So, if you're not, get some notes going... You'll be grateful later when you have a nice little list of what flavourings last, what don't and what come in later.

You mix 2ml test batches?

2 points

by Redz0neover 11 years ago

Yep. The process I use is start small... Then work up gradually to the larger batches. So, first it's 2ml... then it's 5ml and then 10ml. From there it's unlikely that there will be much differences from batch to batch. The reason I start small is mostly because the mixes I tend to make are usually pretty complicated and if I make a bad batch, i'll know on the first one so it's not much lost.

That said, I mix mainly for my own consumption. If I were doing this professionally chances are I'd start with the 5ml (since if I was pro, chances are I'd have larger bottles of flavourings to mix from.)

But wouldn't the accuracy of the mix be much harder to maintain, particularly in complex mixes? Like 3% of 2ml is 0.06ml, a very tricky amount to measure unless you have some crazy micro-pipette setup. I've never personally mixed anything less than 30ml.

Very small batches is a good idea, someone recommended awhile ago to just mix in the syringe, foregoing the bottle altogether. Maybe my equipment isn't precise enough, but I simply don't feel accurate using less than .5ml of anything. Larger amounts allow for less variance and I rarely dip under 20ml even for a test mix (usually in a 30-50ml bottle to allow for easy combining or addition later on).

1 points

by Redz0neover 11 years ago

That sounds like a good idea but to be fair I'd probably be paranoid about cross-contamination of flavourings if I'm using the same needle on the syringe to mix with. (I'm not a pro so even though flavourings are cheap-ish, I have to factor in shipping and making them last since my finances aren't what you'd consider "reliably consistent.")

And thanks for reminding me about recipe notes, good tip! "I'm certain to remember this one... it's so simple" famous last words as I start from scratch again lol

yep. I'm sure everyone here has come across a fantastic mix and lost it because they didn't write it down.

If you'd be interested in selling or trading some of your liquid, I'm always interested in trying DIY. I don't mix any myself, but I LOVE horchata anything! I have some empty/clean 15ml glass bottles w/ drippers ??

What...what does 2000ml of juice look like...

Not as impressive as it sounds, its probably more like 3k. This is about 800ml i have at my comp. desk... lol are mostly finished/currently vaping. http://i.imgur.com/gMfJLFN.jpg

  • app C - green apple cinammon

  • cin-ful waffles
  • cin-less S'mores (no nic, not shown)
  • kiwi can can (kiwi cantaloupe mint, better than it sounds!)
  • Stinger tobaccy (hard to explain, tobacco)
  • Old captain I just mixed to try variants

That was the most accurate response I've ever seen in my life. You even included a banana for scale.

If I weren't such a poor bastard I'd gild you.

Personally i think small batches are too hard to maintain precision on i typically mix 30 -60 ml at a time then split into smaller containers to tweak and test

I don't have that much sitting around, but I do have plenty of flavors I am constantly tweaking. A friend and I are both working on a crustless apple pie flavor.

My main limiting factor is that I haven't bothered to pick up any extra bottles yet so I only have about twelve. :p

My mind was blown the first time I made a flavorless mix. Eventually I just put a few drops of a flavored liquid (not the flavoring, but an already mixed liquid) and I could still taste the flavors. Obviously not as strong, but after you are vaping flavorless, just putting a few drops of a coconut ejuice (for example) still tastes like coconut.

So now I'm stretching my too-many bottles even more.

I love the flavorless juice.

Cheap, no other chemicals, and it just works.

Try Ethyl Maltol, two drops per 3mm tank for a little sweetness.

Agreed on this! Some flavors are so strong (looking at you Vapetrik) I can cut even 5 to 1 and still have great flavor

Waiting for your Horchata Cream recipe....

by oldmanskillzover 11 years ago

I didnt write it down, but its basically a 100ml vg ~9%tfa horchata, 40ml vg ~3% bavarian cream super concentrate (dont know the brand bought from B&M) 40ml vg of a toasted marshmallow/belgian waffle blend that I used previouly - very low concentrate - maybe 2.5% each. Then 60ml of 24mg PG.

So that gives me 240ml of 6mg Horchata 'cream' 75%vg.

But really the Horchata and Bav. Cream together is pretty darn good. The bm guy asked how much for a bottle? lol. I feel silly selling juice though its all just a mad experiment.

Srsly though, get the horchata just a tad higher than where you want it (cinnamon wise), add cream just till you 'notice' it, it should be background note. Then add your nic/pg or nic/vg. Let it steep a couple, few days. it gets real smooth!

Awesome, thx. Got horchata in my last shipment and didn't know how to use it.

I did that on my previous (deleted) account. From juices to mods, and things in between, but the homemade stuff isnt appropriate for that imo.

As a guy who is running really low on juice and too poor to make another MBV order I have to disagree. :p

Then you should be making your own.

6.99http://www.ejuicecig.com/24mg-nicotine-solution-120ml-bottle-size/

2.99 http://www.ejuicecig.com/vegetable-glycerin-usp-grade-kosher-vg-120ml/

1.40 to flavor ~120ml http://www.ejuicecig.com/new-category-2/

For $15 and shipping you could have 240ml of 12mg 50/50 liquid in 3 different flavors

I've been looking for a good horchata recipe. I have TFA horchata and TFA Bavarian Cream. Do you add anything else to your base? Also, what cinnamon do you use for horchata-like flavors?

1 points

by oldmanskillzover 11 years ago

I just start with TFA horchata (edit - as the cinammon, it is basically cinamon with spice notes), it would be too pita to make all the bits myself, but it is so strong in the cinamon department (too strong) so I started mucking around with it.

1 points

by joeDUBstepover 11 years ago

Ah okay. Because when I used TFA horchata, I thought the cinnamon was a little too faint (I'm a cinna-fiend). I might just try adding 0.5%-1% once I get it.

by oldmanskillzover 11 years ago

haha. thats funny because I normally dont like cinnamon! taste is so subjective :) my only horchata reference point is my local Mex. food restaurant!! I think of a cinnamon eggnog when I drink it - good in a gross kind of way!

I just started DIY a month ago, and have 500 + mls in front of me, that I often wonder wtf im doing. I have 1 gal ea PG/VG coming, and have about 50 flavors. It just hit me I need waaaay more bottles.

I also used to be a Chef, and feel the same way about the segue but feel I'll just be like I was in the kitchen. Seeking that perfect flavor, its like a crackhead chasing that Bell.
