I'm asking because I think it'd be a great project to link in the sidebar that could help answer a LOT of questions that tend to be answered here and there on the net but takes some serious digging to find.
What I'm thinking would be things like having a section for the Newbies that goes over things like proper handling, safety, links to studies about iffy or dangerous flavours (such as Diacetyl) and giving them a comprehensive set of information to get them started.
Another section could be listing flavours and showing their profiles, safety information, what their pre and post steeped flavour profiles tend to be, what flavours are felt to work well, what flavours conflict and whether they mix well or stay "separate" and all that... And have a spot where people can comment there (mainly because I think since it would have some measure of subjectivity to it it's going to have differing views on what's "good" and what's "not good.")
Do you think that this might be a worthwhile thing to do and if it were possible, would you be willing to contribute a bit here and there?
Maybe even have a section for some of the more popular recipies?
It would be nice to have a new single flavor % list like the Google doc one, but be able to check mark it as "tank cracking" and "contains non safe chemical".
I was thinking about making this the other day. Still may if there is enough interest...
Well, to be sure I've been looking at some wiki-hosting sites and trying to get something up and running... Right now I'm waiting on Wikia to return some technical questions I have before going that route but I'm going to go ahead and try and get something started.
And yeah, I kinda want to have the flavours list chemicals that might be problematic to some (such as potential allergies and of course the dreaded diacetyl and it's less-of-a-risk-but-still-a-risk cousin acetoin.)
(psst, if you're looking for a way to get a creamy note without the risks of acetoin or diacetyl... Consider adding some marshmallow flavour? Though I only have experience with TFA's line it is likely to be similar enough to others out there... That said It's also a sweetener but as it matures it imparts a very nice creamy kinda flavour... Reminds me of those "Campino" candies. I've been tinkering with it in a "Peaches and Cream" liquid but right now I'm still figuring out how to get a nice peachy taste without it becoming cloying.)
For instance... Say I wanted to know about "Lemon" flavours... I'd go there, search for "Lemon" and it'd list the lemon flavours that are listed there and what their profiles are... And also having things such as reports on what happens when you add too much and too little, what flavours they will react chemically to (if at all) and that kinda thing. A sort of "Everything you wanted to know to mix your own e-liquid but were afraid to ask" deal.
I think there is a lot of potential in a wiki, most of us use various ones every day.
I'm embarrassed to say however that I haven't the slightest clue how to contribute to one other than signing up and hacking my way through. I think you'll find that a fair few people in this sub, that are well versed in DIY, are poorly versed in populating a wiki/wikia.
If you host the framework and have a guide/faq on contributing to it, I'd definitely help fill in any gaps if I am able.
I for one would love a wiki that contains facts over hyperbole. For instance people constantly droning on about important safety such as using gloves with diluted nicotine. It's probably wise that you don't get it onto your hands and touch your eyes, etc. But it's not nearly strong enough to penetrate the skin and give you insta-nic poisoning and/or kill you. Also, more knowledgeable commentary on stuff related to cinnamon and diacetyl would be nice as well. Just saying overall disambiguation would be a great touch to these particular topics; and probably be a better source of reference for all the paranoids and curious alike.
A wiki would be nice. AFAIK there is also JuiceDB.
Full disclosure. I am the author of www.e-liquid-recipes.com
Not to pat my own back, but there is a lot of flavors on my site, and the more people use the same flavor names, the better the stats will be with regards to average percentage on flavoring. You can rate and annotate your flavors and other people can read your notes. You can actually see (public) recipes that the flavor is part of.
I also maintain a list of flavors that crack tanks, are not water soluble or otherwise seem suspect.
That said, I still like the thought of a wiki - I even thought about it myself, but decided that ELR is wiki-like enough for me :)
