....sheesh, I know how kinky it must sound...but my next joose quest is the alchemy necessary to create a leather flavor e-juice...and any assistance, hints, suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
[Actually, that anyone is reading a thread going down a "leather-flavor vaping joose odd-yssey" rabbit-hole is rather incredible...so, well, thank you.]
Here's the back-story: My favored perfume is Cuir de Russe (i.e., Russian Leather) by Chanel.
And then I've always enjoyed black pepper on the palate.
Chanel used birch fragrance extracts to simulate leather in their Cuir de Russe.
So the idea is to concoct a tobac/black pepper/leather flavored juice, a layered flavor that hits the palate with black pepper and tobac, then eases into something vaguely like "that new leather/new car aroma", all gently fading into a long sweet birch finish.
I have the pepper and a good tobacco flavoring...long sought out for their ability to stand apart distinctly and layer in concert.
Mixing flavors that can stand apart and drift into distinct layers, as a good single-malt scotch flows along the palate [like Talisker, et. al.] is a task and an interesting leaning DIY experience. Learned quite a bit there...and all the "steeping this for an eternity ain't gunna help" fails were actually quite worth the effort.
But now I'm hitting a wall. I have no idea if adding leather to the mix would be just the note that would make the aroma I have in my imagination. But I'd like to try.
Is there any flavoring vendor out there that makes anything like a leather flavor? Or a birch flavor?
Or has anyone come across a flavor that may not be called leather or birch that may fail at what it's supposed to be, but comes off like leather or birch?
Or should I just put down the vape pipe because...leather?
Trying to figure out why anybody would want to taste leather, but good luck!
Full Disclosure: Well, I do live in beautious San Francisco, and when I mentioned this latest recipe project to another vaping friend, first thing he said was, "Will you be selling it at the Folsom Street Fair?"
We all live to expand our horizons...so, hmmm...if it becomes a delicious jooze I'm happy with, I'll find a little leather Mother Vaper outfit, go to the fair, give with the samples, and have a fun day.
I haven't the foggiest of ideas how you would do this but I have a strong lead. The Perfumers Apprentice AKA The Flavor Apprentice started out selling perfume molecules and she has a large inventory of perfume molecules on her site.
That said, I have no idea how safe any of them would be to vape but you might want to ask her. Her name is Linda and she has always been extremely helpful any time I've asked for help. I'm sure people have tried using these in their vape before.

Yeah, I do all my recipes 0 nic as baseline, in volume after achieving a suitable blend in micro-batching, then get with the latex gloves and pipettes for exacting the nic in 6/12/16/24 levels for 10 & 30 ml mini-bottlngs.
Wondering now about wearing leather at a bar... ~~and vaping tequila and buffalo wings flaved juice~~...

Hmm, sounds interesting. I'd love it if you would make a thread on your pepper tobac btw! I've been playing with some more savory flavors as well.
Two things spring to mind for your leather/birch.
First off, you may try Oak flavoring. I use it with alcohol flavors to give body and depth. I could definitely see it working into "leather" with some trickery. Maybe even something like a very subtle orange and brown sugar bottom note.
TFA Red Oak - Complementary around 4%.
Flavor Art Oakwood - Have not used.
NF Oak - Have not used but am a fan of Nature's Flavors.
Second, I remember reading on the ecig forums about someone extracting wood flavors. I think he was using an old wine cask? I really don't remember the details or the thread, but he had what he considered an excellent extract after basically soaking the wood chips in PG for a couple weeks. It wasn't very strong though, I think he just added nic and some VG and vaped it raw.
It might be in one of the "Oak Barrel Reserve Threads" (there are more than one).
If you pursue that route, you may check a Home Brewing store as many have a plethora of different species of wood chips that should be clean and high quality. Sawing them into dust or drilling them into 'wispy spirals' should greatly improve concentration and steep time.
If anything comes to mind I'll let you know. Either way, don't forget to keep us updated!
[Edit] p.s. You may consider emailing some of your favorite boutique vendors. Most are passionate about this stuff and might send you in a different direction than you'd come up with yourself. Mixologists like the Vapor Chef know their flavor profiles and might be able to give you a tip like, "Hell, try clove and horehound with x Tobacco and a vanilla note. Who knows. :)

On a more serious note, what about trying a tincture process with leather and PG. Then heat it up and filter it through coffee filters/ strainers. Since it's not a concentrate, use it at the full flavor amount. So like 30% flavoring in a 30pg/70vg mix. Or whatever ratio you prefer. I would let the mix steep. For like a full day before even trying it.
I would be cautious about vaping the leather tincture though. Microscopic leather particles? Sounds like a bad thing to me.

I am tracking along with what you're saying re. extracting a tincture...that is something I'd like to try with coffee beans and citrus zest/skin.
My husband's degree is in Chem, so I do have an in-house molecular geek adviso...and I am pretty much a "know exactly" what the composite is of each and every ingredient I mix Nazi...and be able to doco an active and inactive ingredient product label for all juices made.
...and research (to the best of my ability) any remotely possible ingredient side effect.
After all, I don't think any of us made the harm-reduction choice to swap out analog smokez to then find we're vaping tincture of ground apricot or castor oil seeds some deadly doofus extracted for a wee bit of fruity goodness, eh?.
If my cigarettes tasted of leather before I picked up vaping, I wouldn't of even picked up smoking in the first place.
