I'm considering trying learn to make my own eJuice. Over the years, I've learned to become a relatively good cook. I started out following recipes. Then modifying recipes, and finally, making my own recipes. I would like to follow the same plan for making eJuice.
The problem is that I'm finding it hard to follow the ejuice recipes that I find online. They all seem to just name flavors like I should just know what they are and where to buy them. A lot of them seem to be very hard to google. For instance, "red astaire" seems to be used in a good amount of recipes, but searching for that isn't returning any useful results. All I get is links to other recipes calling for that ingredient or completely unrelated hits. That's not the only ingredient that I can't find. It's just an example. Where do I find this stuff?
edit: Also, where do I find tobacco flavorings? If I was just going to start out without any recipes, I could buy capella flavors, but I like flavors like beeblebrox with tobacco and food flavors, but I can't find the tobacco flavorings.

Could you show a couple links to help clarify what recipes you're talking about? For the most part DIY'ers tend to use TFA (the flavor apprentice, also know as TPA or the perfumer's apprentice) flavors which are available at a host of retail sites. Other popular flavoring companies include Flavor Art, Capella, Flavor West, LorAnn, and many more.

I can't find the recipe listing I was at anymore. It was frustrating so I gave up on it. Thanks for listing the flavor vendors for me though. TFA seems to have a lot of what I'm looking for. Do you know if their tobacco flavorings are derived from actual tobacco? I don't feel comfortable with that. If you don't know, I'll just send them an email.

So this may not be true in this case, but as another newb looking for recipes, I often come across similar problems. I find specific users will pre-make batches of a sort of proprietary "conditioner" for their recipes. For instance, maybe they regularly find themselves adding a bit of marshmallow, sweetener and apple cider vinegar to all of their creations of a certain type... They'll just mix that up ahead of time so it's on hand and ready to go.
Now, this is fine if your recipe sticks to a single message board or the user legitimately has enough of a following that we know what the hell they're talking about but it falls apart when the recipes get disseminated to boards other than where they originated or for new users who haven't read every single post in the recipe-creator's history.
I find that if you keep seeing the same obscure "ingredient" come up on one particular message board, search that term THERE (within that particular forum's search) and see if you can't locate the user describing that ingredient in a previous post.
I like to go to Wizardlabs.us for TFA flavors.

Say I want a Vanilla and Earl Grey juice.
From the thread Vanilla Swirl 10% and Earl Grey Tea 2-3% - I would probably go with less vanilla, say around 7% and try it out.

I order my flavorings from RTS Vapes, Inawera, directly from The Perfumer's Apprentice (Bulk). For tobaccos I like Hangsen and Inawera...My Freedom Smokes still had the TPA discontinued Tobacco Blend in stock, last time I ordered it.

I also buy flavorings from Mt. Baker Vapor.
My standard ratio is 1 drop of flavoring to 1ml of pg/vg base. That's how I've always done it and it works great for me. If you want to add nic, buy some nic juice and cut it down with an ejuice calculator on any smart phone (I'm sure there's one online somewhere).
