oils and safety
submitted over 11 years ago by newbie_help

Hi!

I've been reading up on making my own juices, but am a bit confused and would rather be safe than sorry. I read everywhere oils are bad and should not be vaped. But I also read most flavors bottles are made from from oils of the product.

Could anyone elaborate on flavors and oils? I see links to flavor shops like Lorann/TFA/Capella... Must we be dilligent on which flavors we choose?

Thanks!

A Newbie

Yes you must be dilligent. Really the only one of the main vendors you need to be careful with is Lorann. I suppose Perfumers Apprentice also... you want to use the 'flavor apprentice' on their site.

Basically think of it like this... anything that is 'soluble in water' is going to be ok. Oils however are NOT soluble in water.

Yes, you can eat oils, because your stomach is filled with acid that will emulsify the oils, breaking them down into tiny molecules you can digest. But your lungs don't have acid in them. So if you inhale a bunch of oils, how is your body going to break them down?

So motto should be "If soluble in water it can be vaped"

Thanks for the help.

Here's one that got me thinking: http://www.reddit.com/r/DIY_eJuice/comments/1wzhlx/0_nic_juicers_do_you_add_a_little_more_pg_to/cf6u7od

He links to Jalapeno Flavor, water soluble. Ingredients: Natural and Artificial Flavor, Propylene Glycol, Mono- and Di- Glycerides, Soy Lecithin, Canola Oil

How can it be soluble but also contain Canola oil??

It can't. They may be using such small amounts if oil though that to the eye it appears to blend with the other liquids. But molecularly it isn't.

Maybe someone else can provide a different view but having canola oil in ecig flavoring us insane if u ask me

I'm on my phone so I can't really investigate...but that flavor seems to be on the perfumers apprentice section of their site... Not the flavor apprentice part .

For vaping only use the flavor apprentice products...not the perfumers section.

When they say soluble in water it's tied more to cooking for those flavors. It just means it will mix with liquids...and ultimately your stomach will break it down.

There are some ways to make oil and water blend, such as emulsifiers. In the case for Jalapeno it's the Mono- and Di- Glycerides.

but does that still make it dangerous to vape?

Here is a thread I started on /r/electronic_cigarette that addressed this issue; I'm a chemist, and there's a lot of misinformation about what an oil actually is, so please read it.

so they look like oil but aren't oils. Does this apply to ALL fruits? or are there some with real oil?

Also, the example in this thread with Canola oil, would it be dangerous to vape?

I don't know about it in the minute quantities that you would vape, but in general, inhaling atomized oils is really bad for you.

If you get flavors through wizards the flavorings should be fine. From their site: >"Our Flavor Lab contains a wide selection of over 280 super-concentrated, water-soluble flavorings from various manufacturers. Except where noted, all of our concentrated liquid flavorings are made using FDA approved food flavoring ingredients, are water-soluble, and contain no diacetyl or related compounds."
