Traditionally home made extracts, that I am aware of, use vodka as the base for flavoring. Can these be used in diy vaping?
Now other posts I have seen call for sticking the material in VG or PG that is in a separate container from a pot of boiling water and eventually straining and potentially repeating the process. Is this what I should be using for diy ejuice?
Are there any tutorials around for making extracts that work with vaping, however that might be done?
I have had quite a lot of success making extracts from dry spices (mostly) directly in PG. Generally... about 1 1/2 tablespoons of crushed (easier to deal with than powdered) dry spice in 15ml of PG mixed in a glass jar then warmed in a simmering pot of water on the stove for 45 minutes, cool and strain or filter as appropriate.
I would think a similar extraction could be made in VG.
I have read about a method using alcohol that involves steeping whatever you're extracting in alcohol (maybe with heat) then evaporating away the alcohol until you only have solids left, which you then dissolve in PG or VG.
Check out the November Recipe Thread, I have put a few more specifics in a couple of recipes.
I have also made a very nice homemade vanilla bean extract... two vanilla beans split lengthwise, stuffed into a test tube (they came packaged in a test tube) then fill the tube with PG (about 12ml in my case). Leave it in a darkish place for at least two weeks, you should end up with a dark amber vanilla extract suitable for mixing in a vape at 5% - 15%.
Question- does VG/PG filter through coffee filters? How do you filter your spice extracts?
PG does, it helps if it's warm. Probably VG does too, might need to be more warm. It doesn't hurt to squeeze the coffee filter, but be careful it might burst.
You could use cloth... linen would probably work, then you can squeeze it harder.
If there is sediment in your extract, just let it settle to the bottom and then decant.

I'm assuming you'd strain the pg/vg after steeping for a while. Would be an interesting way to do fruit extracts if that were possible.
So you make your own spice extracts and then combine them with normal flavors from online?
Yes, strain (stainless steel screen) where whole crushed spices were used, filter (coffee filter) or decant when powders are used.

Exactly. So far with surprisingly good results.
I did my coffee extraction in VG/Vodka and just exaporated the vodka after straining. Worked wonders.
