Switched off nicotine now got no throat hit
submitted almost 12 years ago by CadHead

I need help getting my juice right. I quit smoking and started vaping about a month and a half ago, in that time I’ve gone from 18mg nic to as of this weekend 0mg of nic. I decided because I was going 0 nic I may as well save money and mix my own juice, so far I’ve hit two problems with this:

  1. My juice taste isn’t very strong when I’m following recommended quantities, I want powerful flavour am I ok to just keep putting extra flavour in?
  2. My PG hasn’t turned up yet so I’ve gone 100% VG, but this feels like it has no throat hit. Would I get enough throat hit with PG now I’ve binned nicotine? What ratio would you recommend for good throat hit and flavour?

I'm vaping on Protank II’s, an RSST and I have several RBA’s to clean off and use if that makes any difference to your recommendations. So far RSST is my favourite for flavour but I think the air hole is too small.

Spicy, cold, and/or sour additives add to TH. A little bit of Pure Grain Alcohol can help as well.

PG gives more throat hit, VG gives more clouds. I'm @ 6mg and usually mix 50/50.

As for flavor, I have some mixes that are 40% flavoring. Most are 10-20%.

I normally go for 50/50 in premixed juice, I also used to have nicotine. The problem is I have gone to 0 nic with 100% VG and now don't know if the lack of throat hit is predominantly the nic or PG. I probably need to wait for my PG to turn up and try 50/50.

Out of interest, when I'm mixing it all together the flavour will happily sit on top of the VG. what's the best way to mix these together, I just cover the container and shake it but it still appears oily as if it hasn't mixed properly. Do I still need to steep without nicotine?

I "temper" all my juice on a coffee warmer overnight (I don't really like the term "steep"). After 30 minutes or so the VG mixes really well, so I give it a few shakes every couple of hours.

Also, a lot of people who do all-VG will add Vodka or distilled H20 to thin the juice.

Throat hit is almost completely determined by nicotine. I diy and test my flavors at 0 nic, and even at 50/50 there's no throat hit. I also use pure PG to clean out my bridgeless atomizer, and Vaping off the excess gives no real throat hit, either. That's the only reason I still use nic. 6Mg may not give much throat hit, but it's enough for me.

Yep, VG is a pesky "polar" molecule. Have to subtly add a bit of heat.

You may not get more flavour by adding more flavouring. Name the flavouring used and at what percentage and someone may be able to help. Well done weaning off the nic in that short time.

I'm trying to get a really powerful sour apple flavour, a nice strong green apple kick basically. I have TPA apple flavour and TPA sour flavour, I tried it 10% apple 5% sour but it's very bland with 100% VG.

Try a menthol juice if you can. It might add some kick to the inhale.

Do you mean a touch of Menthol in with the other flavours or just menthol flavour on its own?

I could try a touch of menthol with the apple, I'll have to pick some up, don't fancy it on its own though.

The various mints and menthols are going to be your saving grace. Yes, you mix them with your flavors. My brother is 0nic usually and has me mint or mentholate his batches for the throat hit..

Grab some different types and give it a shot. There is peppermint, spearmint, wintergreen, menthol, koolada, etc. Try mint and anise (absinthe) or chocolate (Andes mint) or cucumber. Pear and mint play very well together as well. Koolada works awesome with fruits and just adds a nice cooling throat hit without changing the flavor. Menthol works well with tobbacos if you're into that.

On it's own. At least I haven't tried mixing it with other flavors. That's why I thought it was best to say "if you can" because I know menthol is kind of gross for some.

You can also buy pure menthol crystals on eBay on the cheap. They dissolve right in your juice.

MBV's wintergreen flavor had a really nice throat hit at 6mg. Obviously it would be less with no nicotine, but I bet it would still be satisfying. I felt the same way when I tried no nic, wasn't satisfying. I feel like 6 doesn't affect me negatively, either. So it's a nice balance.

So, I agree, definitely give mint or menthol a try.

Going to pick up some menthol flavour and give that a try. My PG turned up yesterday so I mixed a 70/30 PG/VG up with apple and a bit of strawberry. Tastes much more flavourful with more PG but the strawberry has completed overpowered the apple so I think the apple may not be very good. Going to look for a 'sour apple' flavour and try it with a touch of menthol.

pure grain alcohol can also be used to give throat hit. that's why some freshly mixed flavors have more throat hit until the alcohol dissolves. I'm not real familiar with it so you might google it, but it's an option.

Capsicum (available from ECX) in very very low percentages can simulate a throat hit burn. And you will also get a bit more TH when you can up your PG ratio as well. 70%+ VG mixes have a very 'smooth' and almost fluffy feeling to me. VG also seems to sort of mute flavors so you can up your flavor quantity to whatever hits the mark for you. I also love big flavor so I mix quite high. Utilize hot water baths or use a bowl of hot dry rice to warm your liquid to help marry the flavor with your VG. I've also put some juices away and forgotten about them - finding them 2weeks to 2 months later is always a delight as they have really developed and changed into something just delicious and wonderful.
