Here's what I used: 1/4 cup ground coffee (first watch sunrise blend) 1/2 cup VG 1/4 cup vodka
Put in in a mason jar, brought some water to boil, let it sit in there until it gets to room temp. Remove top, rinse and repeat. Add some vigorous shaking in between too.
I'll do that once in a while, then let it sit in a dark place for a week or so, shaking every day, heating it once in a while, etc...
After about a week of this I'm going bring it to a boil to get rid of the vodka, and then put it through a filter, syringe/cotton ball until I get some nice and clean coffee flavoring.
Any tips?
Boiling it might made the coffee taste cooked. You could instead just evaporate it with the lid off, maybe in a fairly cool oven (mine goes down to 170F).
I almost hate to tell you... I managed to make a terrific coffee extract in pure PG in about 1/2 hour that tasted great immediately and still tastes great 6 weeks later (I don't know how that is possilble). I made only a small amount... I used 1 heaping tablespoon of fresh ground coffee, mixed in 12ml of PG in a glass bottle, heated in a simmering pot on the stove for 20 minutes, then filtered in a normal coffee filter. There was quite a bit of waste... I ended up with only 5ml of extract. But it is dark and strong and oh so coffee tasting...
Anyhow, I am sure your method will work... and I hope it tastes great (I bet it will). Make sure you let us know!
Good luck!
Edit: Mmmmhmmmm... thinking about this... PG boils at a dangerously high temperature! I read a PSA from a /r/electronic_cigarette user who was making tobacco extract. He put PG in a pot, brought it to boiling, then threw in his chopped up tobacco leaves. DISASTER! The tobacco immediately burnt black, spewed smoke everywhere! So beware... don't boil PG!
I've decided, the best way to gauge the process is to take some out, try to filter it out and leave the rest to sit for some time.
I decided it would be best to heat up the liquid and evaporate the rest of the vodka.
Some good information:
- VG decomposes into acrolein at 536°F. Which is dangerous.
- Vodka will evaporate at around 173°F. Which is far below the danger zone.
- Water boils at 212°F
I am a cheap and lazy man (too lazy to buy a thermometer), so I wait for my water to boil, and keep it as low as possible while still boiling, which I assume will be around 212-230°F. Less than half the temp where it is unsafe. This is hot enough to evaporate the vodka.
After about 20 minutes of sitting in the barely boiling water, I have a nice, rich smelling coffee flavor and my house smells of First Watch coffee (which is pretty damn good I might add)
I strained it again and and again until I was sure there was no grounds left in it. This ate up a bunch of my juice, but that's the way she goes.
My final result from my first extract, about 6-7ml of pure coffee goodness.
It smells very strong, so I may just make a bottle of Vanilla Custard and put a few drops of it in for a slight coffee twist. I'll report back after mixing it.
I mixed up 10ml of what I call "First Watch Vanilla Custard" and here is what I used.
50/50 NIC 100mg - 20% VG - 65% Vanilla Custard 13% Coffee Extract - 12 drops.
12mg 75VG/25PG Liquid.
I did a quick hot bath steep and vaped the immediate results.
Not bad. I can taste the vanilla custard and the coffee. It's not on target yet, but I think a week or two of steeping will do it some good.
Congrats! And thanks for including pictures... it will help people understand the process better, including how simple it is to do this without any fancy equipment.
No problem, it is very easy to do, just a little time consuming. ~~I cant wait to vape the results.~~ It's glorious
Thanks for the input guys, after taking in your advice, maybe I wont boil it over and over again. To clarify, I am not boiling the jar, I am boiling water, taking it off the stove, and the putting the jar in the hot (but not boiling) water. I'm pretty sure it is evaporating the alcohol inside the jar because every time I opened it, I got a nice whiff of super potent coffee vodka fumes, but after that initial air is gone, it just smells like a good cup of coffee.
I'm thinking of pairing it with some Vanilla Custard (Capella)
Have not tried making my own extract at all but came across this and wanted to ask a question.
Rather than using ground coffee could you use whole bean or maybe a coarse ground? If so it might help in the straining process.
