Sweeteners. Do I need sucralose, or will I get by fine just using ethyl maltol?
submitted over 12 years ago by MineDoggerMixologist

Just wondering since people seem to be using both and my initial impression was that ethyl maltol was used as a sweetener, but then I read a product description that said that it "can be used to mellow or give a sweetening effect to a recipe without adding any actual sweetness like sugar or sucralose." How does it give a "sweetening effect" without "adding any actual sweetness?" I'm mildly bewildered here...

I have yet to use sucralose as i ordered EM with my first order of supplies. Using about 3 drops per 10ml as some suggest, there was no sweetness that i could detect. I read on a forum some people using up to 10% EM. I tried using 10% solution and it was very sweet. Tasted like i was vaping sugar.

Juice with only EM as a flavoring tastes like cotton candy to me.

EM is also known as "cotton candy flavor".

The biggest difference i have observed is Sucralose is very potent, you taste the sweetness in your mouth and on your tounge, while EM is more of a subtle sweetness, you get more of a hint of sweetness rather than a direct taste. That is using them both at the same, low, percentage.

I've used both, and for my taste and the juices I mix (primarily fruit flavors), Sucralose has worked out best by far. I understand (from reading but not experience) that EM might work better for some other flavor combos.

I just got into DIY this week and ordered both from ecigexpress. I would love some insight from an experienced mixer.
